UK Trade Union Calls for Total Boycott of Israel
In the past two months, British academic and journalistic unions have voted for boycotts against Israel. This Wednesday, Britain’s largest trade union, unison, lent its strength to those wishing to punish Israel by calling for an across-the-board boycott of the Jewish nation.
A resolution issued by delegates meeting in Brighton for unison’s annual conference stated that “concerted and sustained pressure” on Israel is needed, including an economic, academic and sporting boycott.
Commenting on the motion, American Jewish Committee Executive Director David A. Harris said, “British trade unions have become the nerve center of the movement to demonize Israel through boycotts. … With the unison action, the union representing more than 1 million workers in public services in the United Kingdom has now joined with the journalists and academics unions in a shameful hate campaign against the Jewish state.”
The unison statement also called on the British government to push for an international arms embargo against Israel. As Harris stated, “unison explicitly calls for Israel to be denied the means to defend itself at a time when it faces significant threats from Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.”
The movement underway in Britain to boycott the Jews demonstrates a potent anti-Israeli attitude gaining strength in the country. While such moves may not have much of an effect on Israel’s economy, they certainly send the message that Britain won’t have Israel’s back anymore—not good news for a country with so few friends in the world. Watch for Israel to become even more isolated, vulnerable—and desperate.
