Poland: Russia Destroyed Warsaw’s Largest Shopping Center

The Russian secret service was responsible for a fire that destroyed Warsaw’s largest shopping center last year, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Sunday.

The announcement came after a yearlong investigation of the Marywilska 44 shopping center that was burned down on May 12, 2024. With nearly 1,400 commercial units, this mammoth mall was Warsaw’s largest.

Polish officials described the brazen attack as part of a wider series of sabotage and violence by Russia against Poland and other European nations. They plan to close the Russian Embassy in Krakow in response.

Relations between Poland and Russia have significantly worsened since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Preparing for war: Poland is nato’s biggest military spender by percentage of gross domestic product. Last year, it increased its military spending to record levels, spurred on by increasing fear of a Russian invasion.

The nation plans to continue raising its military budget as it enters what Tusk called its “prewar era.”
