Outrage Over Russia’s Actions in Ukraine, Germany Benefits From Stoking the War, the Judicial Branch vs. Trump
It is fascinating to watch the world’s reactions to Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine war. Yesterday we saw how it amplified Europe’s frustration with America and its determination to act independently. This morning we look at some of the nuances to Europe’s reaction.
Spare me the hand-wringing over Ukraine, says Peter Hitchens in yesterday’s Daily Mail. The West’s outrage over Russia’s actions in Ukraine is hypocritical given its own history of manipulating borders and governments in weaker nations.
It’s true that Russia was the aggressor. Yes, rewarding dictators will have consequences. But Hitchens makes a compelling point, especially regarding Europe. A series of historical examples show this is exactly what Europe itself has done. Hitchens begins with the end of World War II:
The biggest of all is the great Yalta appeasement, when the Western nations handed over much of Europe, bound and gagged, to Joseph Stalin’s untender mercies. They were afraid to fight him instead.
Included in this package was the bodily shifting of the whole territory of Poland. To compensate it for losing so much of its land to Moscow, to its east, Poland was awarded a sizable bite out of Germany, to its west. … Millions suffered terribly in this and other linked border changes, and multitudes died in vast, unspeakably cruel ethnic cleansing, which is almost entirely forgotten.
A far more recent and relevant example is the fate of Yugoslavia in 2002. Our editor in chief has called this nation “the first military victim of World War III.” Germany turned a regional dispute into a war by recognizing the independence of Croatia and Slovenia, backed NATO’s bombing of Serbia, and facilitated the creation of Kosovo to weaken Serbia and secure economic and geopolitical control. Germany managed to completely redraw the map of the Balkans and engulf major parts of it into the European Union. It fulfilled Germany’s historical ambition to control southeast Europe and propelled that nation toward fulfilling the Bible’s prophecies about a German-led European superpower.
Thus it is rich to hear Europe, especially Germany, expressing such dismay over the idea of ceding ground to Russia. Putin himself has rightfully called out NATO’s hypocrisy on this issue before.
Hitchens makes this valuable point:
When the world approves of this sort of deal, it calls it “land for peace.” When it disapproves, it calls it “appeasement.” The two are the same. …
The defeated must do as they are told. If only poor President Zelenskyy of Ukraine had spin doctors …. He might then be able to persuade his battered people to pretend they had won. As it is, his chances of selling any sort of peace to his own nation are nil.
Perhaps we could at least help him by explaining he is not the first to give “land for peace” and won’t be the last.
This view does downplay just how evil what Russia has done really is. However, it could be that Europe’s motives, especially Germany’s, in prolonging the war are less than altruistic:
Germany actually benefits from stoking the war: Our feature story this morning, by Josué Michels, details reasons Germany may have for torpedoing negotiations to end the violence.
- Germany is using the war as a testing ground for its weapons, supplying Ukraine with arms in order to refine its military technology and boost its defense industry.
- It is amplifying fears of Russian aggression to push for a stronger European military, increased defense spending and more robust European unity and leadership—especially German leadership.
Besides this, we are witnessing the effects of a clandestine deal we believe Germany has made with Russia, reminiscent of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, to divide influence over Eastern Europe.
Bible prophecy helps to recognize forces at work well beyond what may be evident in the headlines. Continue to follow the Trumpet as we report on how events are unfolding according to God’s blueprint for this end time.
The judicial branch vs. Trump: The Trump administration continues to face opposition from judges throughout the U.S. as they block his executive orders and attempt to overrule the chief executive.
- Yesterday a district court judge blocked Trump’s executive order for proof-of-citizenship when voting. The fact that voters should prove they are citizens ought to be 100 percent unanimous—not just among Americans but among citizens of every country. Yet this judge halted the order by arguing that the Constitution gives power to regulate federal elections to the states and Congress, not the president. True or not, clearly the states and Congress have failed to secure America’s elections.
- Also yesterday, another district court judge blocked the Trump administration from ending DEI programs in K-12 schools. These people are determined to keep pumping that toxic nonsense into our children.
Read our In Brief on this trend, which also details another judge who was arrested yesterday for harboring an illegal immigrant who was likely Tren de Aragua. These judges are supposed to uphold the law. No wonder “the law is slacked and wrong judgment proceeds.”
