China Urges Europe to Unite Against Trump Tariffs

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Britain and the European Union on Tuesday to work with China to defend international trade.

Wang told British counterpart David Lammy that the U.S. had used tariffs “as a weapon to launch indiscriminate attacks on various countries,” harming their economies. He said this caused relations to regress to “the law of the jungle,” adding that it was “a step backward in history, unpopular and unsustainable.”

Wang stated, “As a responsible nation, China stands up to stop this behavior, not only to protect its own legitimate rights and interests but also to uphold international rules and safeguard the multilateral trading system.” This is clearly Chinese propaganda—they are not the saints of the “multilateral trading system.” But expect to see them push this message more as they try to shut America out of the global trading system.

In a separate call with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Wang called on the EU to defend multilateral trade and said China wanted to further strengthen relations with the bloc.

Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping told Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez earlier this month that the EU and China should join forces to defend global trade.

New trade partners: Chinese-European trade relations were strained last year as the EU imposed double-digit tariffs on Chinese imports of electric vehicles. But with the threatening policies of the new Trump administration, China and Europe have shown an increasing willingness to rethink their relationship.

The call for cooperation comes days after China urged Japan to join it in the fight against U.S. tariffs. Japan is another power that has historically been an enemy of China.
