The End of the “New Morality”

Tomorrow’s “Day of Silence” is a sign that the sexual revolution that began after World War I is about to end.

“If ever the Western world needed a book, it needs this one now!” That’s how Herbert W. Armstrong began The Missing Dimension in Sex, his groundbreaking book on marriage and family.

Conceived in 1949—originally as the textbook for his Ambassador College Principles of Living class—The Missing Dimension in Sex became a revolutionary exposé on the sexual and cultural revolutions (along with their disastrous consequences) that swept the Western world after World War i.

Mr. Armstrong called this 20th-century sexual revolution the “new morality” (a term originally coined by Durant Drake), and explained that it began with Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis.

“He and his followers in the newly appearing profession of psychiatry urged knowledge dissemination and sexual freedom as the panacea,” wrote Mr. Armstrong. “If repression and self-denial caused the neurotic disquiet, why not reverse the interpretation of morality? Emancipate the people from restraints. Put a new definition on sex. Define it as good, not degrading, shameful and evil—any use of sex, in or out of marriage” (emphasis mine throughout).

Freud’s call for “sexual freedom” thrived, working loose the shackles of ignorance—and along with it moral restraint. By World War ii, the revolt against traditional marriage and use of sex had gained traction. During the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s the “new morality” became mainstream. “World War ii shot morals into the gutter,” said Mr. Armstrong, and by the latter half of the 20th century, they had “plunged all the way to the cesspool.”

But the “advance” of the armies of the “new morality” came with painful casualties. Mr. Armstrong wrote:

Where are we now—after a year into the ’80s? In the United States 1 million teenage girls, unmarried, getpregnant every year! … Two Johns Hopkins University professors … report that 50 percent of the nation’s teenage girls—age 14 to 19—have had premarital sex. …Today, with the avalanche of sex literature and sex education published since World War i and with sex everywhere freely discussed, the teens are indeed “wise” in sexual discussion and sexual experience, but still woefully IGNORANT in sex knowledge. …Sex ignorance is testified by the fact of 250,000 reported adolescent gonorrhea cases annually. … Over 2½ million American men and women avoid marriage altogether—yet live together, either as unmarried heterosexuals or as homosexuals.

That was 1981!

The promotion of the homosexual lifestyle is one of the most far-reaching and extreme forms of the “new morality.”
Nearly three decades later, today’s teens are more self-aware, sex-charged and promiscuous than ever. Rates of abortion and sexually transmitted disease among teens remain high. Teen pregnancy and divorce rates remain high, and more couples are living together, with marriage far more passé than in 1981. Today, family disintegration is a cultural norm—accepted and, in many cases, even promoted.

But the problems of the 20th-century “new morality” haven’t just intensified; new forms of “sexual freedom” have been thrust into the mainstream. New depths of degradation have been reached. Since 1981, the most alarming and dangerous onslaught has been the emergence and widespread acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle into mainstream society.

Nothing illustrates this better than the “Day of Silence.”

Tomorrow, hundreds of thousands of adolescents from more than 6,000 schools across America will refuse to speak—some all day, and others for partial periods—to protest the alleged harassment of and prejudice and discrimination against students who identify themselves as homosexual, bisexual or transgender. Classes across America will descend into disarray as impertinent youth flash cards explaining their rebellious refusal to speak.

The Day of Silence is being organized by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (glsen), one of the most powerful and well-funded homosexual activist groups in America. glsen’s involvement speaks volumes about the true nature of tomorrow’s Day of Silence; it has very little do to with bullying and harassment, and everything to do with promoting the homosexual lifestyle in the impressionable minds of adolescents. Tomorrow’s cunning assault has been designed by liberal activists to not only arouse sympathy for the homosexual cause, but also to teach children that homosexual conduct is perfectly normal, completely safe and an absolutely acceptable form of sexual expression.

The promotion of the homosexual lifestyle is one of the most far-reaching and extreme forms of the “new morality.”

Kids participating in this Day of Silence, explained columnist Matt Barber this week, are by default “taught that biblical truth, which holds that human sexuality is a gift from God shared between husband and wife within the bonds of marriage, is ‘homophobic,’ ‘hateful’ and ‘discriminatory.’”

Like the broader homosexual movement, the Day of Silence is an attack on God.

It’s also the highest form of hypocrisy. In defending homosexuals from bullying and discrimination, participants—many of whom will wield posters and admittedly be outspoken in their commemoration of the day—will be bullying and discriminating against those students who have traditional, conservative views.

Schools are supposed to be places of learning, not sanctums of homosexual indoctrination.

Barber continued: “It’s the height of impropriety and cynicism for ‘gay’ activists and school officials to use good-hearted but misguided children as pawns in their attempt to further a deceptive, highly controversial and polarizing political agenda. dos is pure, unadulterated propaganda and, based on the medical science, amounts to nothing short of educational malpractice. With liberal school officials in tow, these militant homosexual activists are brazenly circumventing and abusing parental authority to further this dangerous political agenda.dos is also a slap in the face to the many students with traditional moral values.” Beyond exposing the indoctrination of America’s youth, Barber does a terrific job of showing, using some alarming facts and statistics, that homosexual activists promote a lifestyle proven to be highly dangerous.

In The Missing Dimension in Sex, Mr. Armstrong showed how the “new morality” essentially began as an adolescent movement. It thrived during the 1950s and ’60s, when sex-charged, lawless young people revolted against “prudery, repression and ignorance,” and embraced an amoral cultural revolution. The “new morality” became mainstream when those young people became parents and the leaders of society.

Today, the homosexual movement, using programs like the Day of Silence, employs the same strategy: By indoctrinating tomorrow’s leaders in the pro-homosexual agenda, liberal activists and educators are not only destroying the last vestiges of traditional, conservative values, they are also securing the future of homosexuality as a mainstream movement.

This trend is sweeping across America. In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed four bills last October that promote homosexual, bisexual, transsexual and other deviant lifestyles in the classroom, as early as the kindergarten level. Other states are exploring similar laws. Liberal, activist educators are ensuring the homosexual lifestyle seeps into the nooks and crannies of the entire educational system, from homosexual teachers to politically correct textbooks to school-sanctioned homosexual clubs and organizations. Almost half of all California high schools have Gay-Straight Alliance clubs.

The emergence of the homosexual lifestyle into mainstream American culture shows that the “new morality” is reaching its most dangerous form. History shows what the eventual outcome of our rapid descent into the depths of the moral cesspool will be.

Events in Genesis 6 describe the world prior to the Noachian Flood. If you study that chapter, you will see that moral degradation and the disintegration of marriage and family, including rampant homosexuality, were largely behind God’s decision to obliterate human civilization. Genesis 19 shows that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of pervasive homosexual practices. The downfall of Rome teaches the same lesson: Widespread sexual perversion, especially homosexuality, filled the halls of Rome right before its destruction.

The lesson: Sexual and cultural revolutions defined by widespread practice of sexual perversions, especially homosexuality, precede the catastrophic destruction of nations!

Schools are supposed to be places of learning, not sanctums of homosexual indoctrination.

This is what Herbert Armstrong came to realize in 1949 when he first sat down to write The Missing Dimension in Sex. As he witnessed the “new morality” spread like wildfire—and knowing what the end result would be—he saw the world’s starving need for a book explaining why the sexual revolution, the true purposes of marriage and family, and how people could escape the penalties of sexual perversion.

That’s why, prior to releasing the third and final version of The Missing Dimension in Sex in 1981, Mr. Armstrong wrote a letter underscoring its vital importance:

All our problems in society today are of a spiritual nature—including sex. But what is the Creator’s purpose in all this? How did He intend sex to be used? Only for reproduction? That was a religious teaching for many centuries; yet, shockingly, that is not God’s teaching in the Bible! The fact is, religion, Christianity, has never understood the true biblical teaching straight from God the Creator!Parents sorely need this knowledge—the missing dimension in knowledge. It’s plain enough once you see it in your Bible. Single people need it. Youths need it. Children need right teaching from parents. But most parents either could not properly teach their children—or else have felt too embarrassed.Teenagers need proper knowledge, yet heretofore it has not been available to them. In this age of pressures toward promiscuity, blinded by false teachings, adolescents cannot be expected to resist premarital sex unless their minds are opened to intelligent acceptance of God’s purposes and laws for our good—for a more abundant and truly pleasurable and happy life.Married people need this knowledge if their marriage is to be preserved and happy.

That was 1980!

Nearly 30 years later, the armies of the “new morality” have “advanced” far beyond what Mr. Armstrong ever witnessed. Today, the emergence of an empowered and increasingly embraced homosexual movement is proof that the United States (and all of Anglo-America) has entered the darkest, most unsustainable, final depths of moral degradation.

History both biblical and secular show that a nation transfused with the homosexual lifestyle is a nation on the brink of destruction. That’s why you need to request your own free copy of The Missing Dimension in Sex.
