Biology Professor Fired for Teaching Sex Is Determined by X and Y Chromosomes

A biology professor at a Texas community college was fired after four students walked out of a lecture where he claimed sex is determined by X and Y chromosomes. Johnson Varkey had taught biology at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio for 20 years before he was fired in January. Now the First Liberty Institute, a Texas-based nonprofit Christian conservative law firm, is demanding Varkey’s reinstatement. “The college fired him for teaching basic and widely accepted concepts of biology,” the First Liberty Institute said in a statement on June 23. “We’re asking the college to immediately reinstate Dr. Varkey to his position and clear his record of any wrongdoing.”

Irrational trend: Firing a biology professor for teaching biology is extreme, yet this is not the first time something like this has happened. Six years ago, Netflix cut a segment from a 1996 episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy where a woman tells viewers: “See, inside each of our cells are these things called chromosomes, and they control whether we become a boy or a girl. See, there are only two possibilities: XX, a girl, or XY, a boy.”

Despite the new progressive orthodoxy, what makes a person male or female is clear-cut: The presence of a Y chromosome makes you male, while the absence of a Y chromosome makes you female. This scientific reality applies even to the 1-in-2,000 babies born with an abnormal number of chromosomes.

Insane ideas: Denying the genetic realities underlining biological sex is insane, yet there is a reason so many people are adopting insane opinions. When people give up faith in God, their natural drive to have faith in something is diverted into a wide variety of irrational ideologies. Yet these false ideologies bend facts to fit theories and never adequately explain the physical and spiritual laws God set in motion. This is why the Apostle Paul wrote that those who do “not like to retain God in their knowledge” are given “over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient” (Romans 1:28). Once you start rejecting the laws that God revealed in the Bible, it does not take long before you begin rejecting physical laws as well.
