How Lincoln Won the Civil War
By Gerald Flurry • June 19
In 1863, as America was about to be torn apart and devastated by the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln presented his plan to save the nation. Today, many leaders say we’re headed for another civil war. Lincoln’s example could help Americans avoid bloodshed altogether.
Lincoln knew the secret to national success better than anybody. His formula saved America and would do the same for us today. He knew that a divided nation could not stand—that America was destined to become a smattering of divided, insignificant states unless something radically changed. This would have run counter to the Constitution.
Lincoln proclaimed a national day of fasting on March 30, 1863, to be observed on April 30. He said:
Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and just government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has, by a resolution, requested the president to designate and set apart a day for national prayer and humiliation.
And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.
Lincoln spoke of “sublime truth”—the lofty, noble truth of the Bible! Holy Scriptures! Later in the proclamation, he wrote: “We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God” (emphasis mine). Can you imagine a politician standing up and saying this today? Americans’ morals and spiritual lives are far worse than they were in Lincoln’s time.
In another proclamation of a national day of fasting on Aug. 12, 1861, Lincoln said:
And whereas, when our own beloved country, once, by the blessing of God, united, prosperous and happy, is now afflicted with faction and civil war, it is peculiarly fit for us to recognize the hand of God in this terrible visitation, and in sorrowful remembrance of our own faults and crimes as a nation and as individuals, to humble ourselves before Him, and to pray for His mercy—to pray that we may be spared further punishment, though most justly deserved.
Lincoln understood that punishment and national disunity are the results of sin. He took responsibility and confessed that America deserved the suffering of the Civil War.
America and Britain today lead the world in broken marriages, fractured families and pornography. Satan attacks marriage and family because they are God-plane relationships! Marriage is a type of God’s loyal people marrying Jesus Christ very soon. Family is a type of the Family of God we have an opportunity to be born into spiritually.
In the 1863 proclamation, Lincoln put forward the solution: “It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”
This matches God’s absolute, iron-clad promise in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” God heard Lincoln’s prayers and saved America. This is the solution our nation desperately needs today!
All this being done, in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope authorized by the divine teachings, that the united cry of the nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace.
How wonderful are unity and peace? Can we achieve these ideals again? Only if we follow what Lincoln is saying. He rebuked himself and the nation for being “too proud to pray to the God that made us”!
Examine the fruits of Lincoln’s leadership. His way worked.
“We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own” (ibid). Lincoln recognized that America’s national blessings came from God, but that the people were starting to take credit. Have you heard of the concept of American exceptionalism? The truth is, America did absolutely nothing to earn such abundant blessings from God. (As you can prove by studying our free book The United States and Britain in Prophecy, these blessings are a result of God’s birthright promises to the patriarch Abraham.)
Our wealth, resources and other advantages didn’t come from our own wisdom and ingenuity. But they also weren’t an accident. America is the greatest nation in world history. Our biblical brothers presided over the greatest empire in world history, the British Empire. That empire has faded into the past. We are about to follow them—unless we repent for offending God!
God foretold the greatness of America and Britain thousands of years ago. It has nothing to do with us! “And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins” (Genesis 35:11). God did exactly what He said He would do: raise up one powerful nation and one dominant empire.
“And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land” (verse 12). America and Britain acquired their land and wealth as a birthright blessing passed down the ancestral line of Abraham.
Clearly, God has done His part to bless America. Have we done our part to preserve these blessings? Or have we forsaken God? Lincoln called on everybody to repent! Everybody!
Satan’s Attack on True Religion
“Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord God; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!” (Ezekiel 13:2-3). How many prophets and ministers prophesy from their own hearts instead of speaking for God? God warns them and all people through one man! He is sending a stormy wind before the arrival of the real storm (verse 13).
Through the suffering, America “shall know that I am the Lord” (verse 14). During the Great Tribulation, millions will repent and be spared. They will realize that their ministers have built a rickety wall of false doctrines (verses 10-15). These clumsily cobbled-together doctrines can’t be proved from the Bible! This is a sobering warning to ministers: You had better know what you’re talking about! Otherwise, you will receive the “greater condemnation” (James 3:1).
Before Lincoln left Illinois to assume the office of the presidency, he said:
Unless the great God who assisted [George Washington] shall be with and aid me, I must fail. But if the same omniscient mind, and the same Almighty arm that directed and protected him, shall guide and support me, I shall not fail. I shall succeed. Let us all pray that the God of our fathers may not forsake us now.
Lincoln always looked to God. The Civil War almost destroyed America, but Lincoln knew God could deliver.
These days are far more dangerous than Lincoln’s time. “Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time” (Revelation 12:12). Satan and his demons are now stuck on Earth and swarming the minds of human beings! The good news is, their time to terrorize is short. Jesus Christ is coming soon!
“And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child” (verse 13). Satan’s number one target is God’s Church. He caused 95 percent of God’s own people to forsake God.
“And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent” (verse 14). Those of us doing God’s work today before Christ’s return will receive protection for 3½ years in a place of safety. Physical and spiritual protection. This truly is a miracle from God!Read More
