A Message From Stephen Flurry

The Trumpet’s executive editor presents a live Online Appearance Campaign on theTrumpet.com.
From the February 2019 Trumpet Print Edition

Are you really getting the Trumpet’s message? You are holding this magazine in your hands. You are reading about Europe’s search for leadership, about radical Islam’s push in all directions, about Asia’s economic superpower, and about the Americans, the British and the Jews decaying morally, economically and strategically.

You are reading about how these enormous, complex and fateful events will affect your life. And you are reading passages from the Bible that show that these events were prophesied thousands of years in advance. But are you really getting the Trumpet’s message?

There is something more you need to do.

Hundreds of thousands of people in more than 130 countries read the Trumpet. But few act on it. Maybe this includes you. They follow the message, they agree with it, but they have yet to take the next step. The same God who inspired the Bible’s amazing prophecies also inspired it to show you what to do next. Only those few whom God calls and works with even have an opportunity to respond to His message. But maybe that includes you.

Find out what the next step is. Watch the Trumpet’s special online Personal Appearance Campaign with Stephen Flurry on Sunday, February 24.

The Trumpet, in Person

Live Personal Appearance Campaigns bring the Trumpet’s message of warning and hope to hundreds—maybe even you.
From the February 2019 Trumpet Print Edition

You can see the Trumpet live. Not just read it, not just hear it, not just view it, but attend it and experience it in person. How? By attending a Trumpet Personal Appearance Campaign.

Since 1994, Trumpet editor in chief and Key of David presenter Gerald Flurry has delivered dozens of personal appearance campaigns to Trumpet subscribers in about 20 cities across the United States, with two additional appearances in Canada and South Africa. Trumpet subscribers in Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, New York, Phoenix, Toronto and beyond have heard Mr. Flurry deliver live lectures focusing on world events, the hope contained in Bible prophecy, and what more Trumpet subscribers can do beyond reading the Trumpet and watching The Key of David.

“The audience was very positive and receptive,” Mr. Flurry wrote after a Los Angeles-area campaign in a Jan. 25, 2018, Trumpet Brief e-mail message. “It was wonderful to have that face-to-face contact with some of our readers.”

Mr. Flurry’s son, Trumpet executive editor Stephen Flurry, has conducted campaigns in London, England, and Belfast, Northern Ireland. In the midst of the London campaign, he wrote in a Trumpet Brief e-mail, “These campaigns are aimed at stirring [Trumpet readers] to conviction and action” (Oct. 23, 2018).

Trumpet Personal Appearance Campaigns are patterned after the campaigns conducted by Herbert W. Armstrong. In addition to founding the Trumpet’s predecessor, the Plain Truth, and presenting the World Tomorrow television and radio programs, Mr. Armstrong traveled around the world delivering the same message in person at lectures to as many as 24,000 people at a time.

Although Trumpet campaigns are smaller, they accomplish the same purpose, using the same pattern. More importantly, they deliver the same sober yet hopeful biblical prophetic message that Mr. Armstrong delivered throughout his 50-year ministry prior to his death in 1986. Mr. Flurry’s campaign subjects have included the hope in Bible prophecy, “God’s master plan for you personally,” God’s intervention in world events, the uselessness of Bible prophecy unless it builds faith, the living Savior Jesus Christ, what Christ is doing today, boldly coming before God’s throne, how physical family represents God’s Family, the transcendent potential of human beings in the afterlife, the inspiring vision of the book of Hebrews, evolution, God’s Sabbath and holy days, and Christ’s admonition to “watch and pray always.”

One event coordinator in Houston characterized Mr. Flurry’s lectures as “masterfully put together and delivered,” adding, “I know that God inspired that. It was a noticeably strong message both nights, and the people responded positively to that.”

“I was amazed how he painted a picture of this way of life,” another coordinator said after a campaign in Chicago. “He reminded me of Mr. Armstrong by addressing the audience like a loving grandfather helping to guide the way.”

What is it like to attend a Trumpet Personal Appearance Campaign?

Trumpet subscribers arriving at the hotel ballroom to attend the lecture are greeted by campaign coordinators and other volunteers who are members of the Philadelphia Church of God, of which Mr. Flurry is the pastor general. These volunteers and their families help prepare for the lectures by setting up tables, chairs, banners and backdrops, and setting up and operating audio-video equipment. When Trumpet subscribers arrive, the volunteers welcome them, scan tickets, and provide information about free literature and follow-up Bible studies. One volunteer said his fellow volunteers had a “bubbly excitement” for the opportunity to contribute to the work of the Trumpet directly and in person. Most drive for more than an hour, with some driving hundreds of miles one way or taking off work in order to volunteer.

Each campaign consists of two lectures on two days, typically Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings. Following a short video presentation, Mr. Flurry delivers a 90-minute lecture. Afterward, many subscribers take the opportunity to meet Mr. Flurry. He converses with them for a couple of hours about world events, prophecy, the Bible and, in some cases, becoming more involved with the work of the Trumpet. Other Church ministers also make themselves available to chat with subscribers.

“I was very impressed with the co-workers that I visited with,” one minister said after a campaign. “They seemed to have a good bit of knowledge about world events and what we teach doctrinally. More importantly, most had attitudes that seemed very teachable.”

Trumpet subscribers can also visit with Church member volunteers as they staff tables offering free literature, including dozens of books and booklets written by Mr. Flurry and free subscriptions to Royal Vision, the Christian-living sister magazine to the Trumpet. Sign-up sheets are also available for subscribers interested in attending follow-up Bible studies. The studies take place the weekends following the campaign, in the same cities, and are given by Church ministers on subjects designed to build on Mr. Flurry’s lectures. Subjects have included living faith, the book of Hebrews, the Sabbath and current news. As a result of attending campaigns and subsequent Bible studies, some Trumpet subscribers have become members of the Philadelphia Church of God, lending their full support to Mr. Flurry and the Church. Some have even become campaign volunteers themselves.

“We aim to be a stronger witness,” Mr. Flurry said regarding attendees of the campaigns and Bible studies. “Hopefully a few will become members in the Church, which has a big impact on God’s work.”

“This evening was an eye-opening event,” one guest said after attending Stephen Flurry’s campaign in London. “It taught us so much that we didn’t know before, and things we’ve been taking for granted. So it was a very good evening. I wish more of these can be organized.”

At the London campaign, people attended from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Germany and the Netherlands. One guest said, “I really enjoyed this evening. I just love the way the world’s crisis is merged with the Bible and the teaching. And I think a lot of the churches out there are not giving the correct teaching and [are] leading the flock astray.”

“Everyone was very attentive during the 90-minute lecture, and we conversed afterward for about two hours,” Stephen Flurry said. “I am so glad that each of them made the effort to attend, and it was a thrill for me to speak to them and to know that God might be working in their lives.”

Gerald Flurry gave two campaigns in 1994, 10 in 1999–2000, and 10 more in 2006–2008. In spring 2017, the Church purchased a corporate jet, largely to enable him to meet more supporters of the Trumpet and to restart the Personal Appearance Campaigns. Since then, he has conducted campaigns in Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Houston, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; Columbus, Ohio; Greenville, South Carolina; and Toronto, Ontario.

Mr. Flurry has scheduled more appearances for 2019, including New York and Central Florida. Stephen Flurry plans to present lectures in Glasgow, Scotland (mid-March), Manchester, England (May) and in other cities later in the year.

How can you attend a Trumpet Personal Appearance Campaign in your city?

If you have a Trumpet subscription and Mr. Flurry schedules a campaign within about 200 miles of your mailing address, you will receive an invitation letter about a month prior to the campaign with instructions on how to register. (Like the Trumpet, all Philadelphia Church of God publications, programs and campaigns are completely free.) Once you are registered, you will receive details on the time and location of the campaign, typically the ballroom of a quality hotel. Questions can be directed to pac@theTrumpet.com.

What if none of the upcoming campaigns come to your part of the world?

For Trumpet subscribers around the world who want the Personal Appearance Campaign experience, there is good news. Executive editor Stephen Flurry will present an online campaign on February 24 (4 p.m., gmt). You can watch it live at theTrumpet.com.

“[E]ach person matters immensely,” Stephen Flurry wrote in his Oct. 23, 2018, Trumpet Brief, “and our staff members have been praying that the message will really sink in for everyone who hears it.

“Hopefully this in-person experience will help dozens of people who have been comfortable just reading and following the message to act on it, to devote themselves to God. If they only follow the message and agree with it, they are missing out! God has immense blessings for those who turn to Him, and not just protection from the disasters that are about to explode here in Britain and around the world: much more than that. He also has an amazing, blessed, abundant way of life in store for those who submit to Him, and an amazing future greater than anything you can imagine. Of course, only those few whom God specially calls and works with even have the opportunity to respond to His message. But maybe that includes dozens of those who joined us here in London last night and tonight.

“And maybe that includes you.”

‘A New Africa-Europe Alliance’

From left: European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz at the start of a EU-Africa forum meeting in Vienna on December 18

‘A New Africa-Europe Alliance’

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Baron Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg want to expand Europe’s empire to Africa.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Rwandan President Paul Kagame participated in the High-Level Forum Africa-Europe in Vienna on December 18. More than 50 official delegations from member states of the African Union and the European Union attended the forum, along with 1,000 innovators and representatives of companies and start-ups from Africa and Europe. The theme of the meeting was “Taking cooperation to the digital age.”

Chancellor Kurz currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, and President Kagame is the chairman of the African Union, which consists of 55 African countries.

The high-level meeting in Austria is seen as the first step of “a new Africa-Europe alliance,” according to the EU’s summary paper on the meeting. The joint projects created at the forum will extend the cooperation between the two continents to areas beyond their common challenge of migration. Among other things, Europe promised higher investments and cooperation in the sectors of African agriculture, financial technologies, start-ups, sustainable energies and education.

Why is Europe so interested in Africa? In the next decade, Africa’s resources will be an important consideration not only for Africa, but also for the powers that control or influence African nations. The African continent is rich in precious metals, gems, ivory, wood, natural gas and oil. Due to a lack of technology, education and infrastructure, many of these resources lie untapped or unused. As the store of available resources in the developed world nears exhaustion, the West’s dependence on imports rises. Thus Africa has become a battleground for the world’s major powers.

Europe knows investing in Africa means investing in the future. The number of well-educated workers in Africa is estimated to grow by 15 to 20 million annually over the next three decades. European investments now target this growing workforce to ensure that their local deployment will be productive.

So far, Europe’s trade relationships with African nations have been conditional, depending on how well those nations uphold human rights. Unlike Europe, China has ignored some nations’ human rights violations and has made major strides in exploiting Africa’s resources. (China’s global trade advances are explained in “Brave New World (Made in China),” an article in our latest Trumpet magazine.)

But Europe is now ready to do the same. Kurz emphasized that Europe “can’t leave Africa to the Chinese.” The Austrian chancellor is not the only one who believes that Europe has to change its approach when it comes to Africa.

Guttenberg Advocates Europe in Africa

When the joint forum took place, former German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg was also in Vienna, and he discussed the same topics with Austrian Finance Minister Hartwig Löger. Löger had invited Guttenberg to the traditional Finance Ministry event, Finanz im Dialog, which was held on the top floor of the Finance Ministry. The theme of the night was “Brave new Europe? How can the old Continent meet the challenges of global competition?” (Trumpet translation throughout).

At the event, Guttenberg criticized Europe’s response to China’s progress in Africa. He said that rather than meeting these decisive global developments, “the U.S. and Europe have been too busy with themselves. … Europe has been looking at Africa for far too long out of a developmental political nostalgia, instead of realizing that China in particular also sees strong political power potential in Africa.”

Guttenberg also emphasized that Europe has the ability to be much more involved in Africa, but it has so far lacked the will to use it. “Through the industry that we have in Europe, we have huge opportunities” for economic growth, Guttenberg said. Europe’s economic strength, industrial might and geographical proximity to the African continent put it in the ideal position to become Africa’s most important trading partner.

While Austria has been paving the way recently for this increased cooperation between the two continents, the industrial powerhouse of Germany will ultimately determine the success of the endeavor. Although Germany is currently in a major leadership crisis, Bible prophecy foretells that this country is soon to undergo a sudden transformation. Daniel 8 reveals that “a king of fierce countenance” will rise out of Germany in this end time. He will lead a united European superpower to become a world empire.

Austria’s finance minister is already looking to Baron Guttenberg for direction. Austria as a whole might soon do the same. For almost a decade, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has predicted that this man will likely lead Europe to its prophesied destiny.

Part of that prophesied destiny is that Europe will soon control much of the world’s trade and resources. The Prophet Isaiah foretold that Europe would become the “marketplace for the nations” (Isaiah 23:3; New King James Version). The book of Revelation similarly warns of the rise of a merchant power in the heart of Europe. Revelation 18 uses the word “merchants” four times to describe the economic power of the prophesied European empire.

A prophecy in Ezekiel 27 gets specific about Europe’s cooperation with Africa. In an article titled “The Battleground” from the March 2006 issue, Trumpet managing editor Joel Hilliker and Trumpet writer Robert Morley explain:

Expect Africa, too, to fall sway to this emerging titan of trade. Read for yourself this prophecy of Europe’s exploitation of African resources: “The men of Rhodes [Dedan in the margin] traded with you [king of Tyrus—the revived Roman Empire]; many coastlands were your own special markets, they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony [merchandise peculiar to Africa]. … The traders of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; they exchanged for your wares the best of all kinds of spices, and all precious stones, and gold” (Ezekiel 27:15, 22; Revised Standard Version). (Dedan and Sheba were sons of Raamah, the great-grandson of Ham, from whom all black Africans descended.) As Britain and America fade out of Africa and into the sunset of superpowers past, Europe positions itself to march in. Germany in particular will corporately “reinvade” its old African colonial possessions, pillaging resources to feed the furnaces and drive the machinery that will turn out tools of war for a remilitarizing imperialist power.

The coming European superpower has been prophesied in detail in the Bible.

The situation in Africa is about to turn in Europe’s favor. Daniel 11 prophesies that Europe will take over many nations in Africa and the Middle East militarily and economically. Verse 44 foretells that Europe will then be troubled by “tidings from the east,” referring to China and other Asiatic nations. While there will likely be a brief cooperation between the two rising empires in Europe and Asia as they unite against America, the Bible prophesies that they will eventually clash violently.

God not only prophesied of today’s world kingdoms, He also foretold His supernatural intervention in world affairs. Request a free copy of Ezekiel: The End-Time Prophet, by Gerald Flurry, to learn more about the prophesied direction that today’s news will take and where all of this ultimately leads.

Poll: Two Thirds of Russians Miss the Soviet Union

Vladimir Putin is among a large majority who regret the collapse of the ussr.

Two thirds of Russians regret the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to a survey conducted by Levada Center, published on December 19.

The study interviewed 1,600 Russians in their homes and has a margin of error of less than 4 percent.

Of the 66 percent who said they regret the Soviet Union’s fall, more than half said that they regret losing the Communist union’s “single economic system.” More than a third said they miss living under a great world superpower. Levada sociologist Karina Pipiya said, “Now the nostalgia is more determined by economic factors and regret that there used to be more social justice and that the government worked for the people and that it was better in terms of care for citizens and paternalistic expectations.”

Levada Center is an independent nongovernmental polling organization in Russia. Its results often agree with those of similar organizations in other countries. Levada has conducted a similar poll since March 1992, the year after the Soviet Union collapsed. Since then, the number of Russians expressing regret over the breakup of the Soviet Union has remained high.

In 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin famously described the collapse of the Soviet Union as the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.” This year, when reporters asked which historical event in Russian history he would like changed, Putin responded, “the collapse of the Soviet Union.” His goal has been to restore Russia to superpower status. And two thirds of Russians support his goal.

Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has said that Russia will return to superpower status and that Putin will be the driving force behind Russia’s resurgence. In his booklet The Prophesied ‘Prince of Russia,’ Mr. Flurry discusses Putin’s statements about the ussr’s collapse, then he writes:

Given the dozens of millions of Soviet citizens who were imprisoned, persecuted and murdered under that authoritarian system, most of us would say the opposite! Putin not only mourns the ussr’s collapse—he is bent on rebuilding it and restoring the glory of imperial Russia. …

We need to watch Vladimir Putin closely. … Russia’s resurgence—which we see reported in headlines often—shows that end-time Bible prophecies are rapidly being fulfilled!

Mr. Flurry’s analysis is based on specific end-time Bible prophecies. Ezekiel 38 forecasts that a massive bloc of Asian nations, led by Russia, will form during the end time. The Bible calls this Asian alliance “the kings of the east” (Revelation 16:12). Revelation 9:16 shows that this “kings of the east” alliance will field an army of 200 million men. In the September 2014 issue of the Philadelphia Trumpet, Mr. Flurry wrote:

I strongly believe Vladimir Putin is going to lead the 200 million-man army. Just look at the power he already has. Can you think of any other Russian politician who could become so powerful and have the will to lead Russia into the crisis of crises? I see nobody else on the horizon who could do that. And only a tiny few years remain for the prince of Rosh to appear!

Such a man doesn’t appear overnight. It takes years for even a strong-willed leader to gain such control. Vladimir Putin already has the power—and the will to use it. I believe there is not enough time for a competitor to arise and challenge him. Over 80 percent of his people support his leadership.

To understand why the Trumpet closely watches Russia’s rise to superpower status, please request your free copy of The Prophesied ‘Prince of Russia.’ This booklet explains in detail the prophecies that say Russia will again emerge as a superpower. It shows why Vladimir Putin is the biblically prophesied “prince of Rosh.” It also explains how Russia’s resurgence will ultimately lead to the return of Jesus Christ, who will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity. This booklet will give you tremendous hope!

Five Years of Island-Building

A look back on an ominous anniversary

Five years ago this month, China began creating artificial islands in the South China Sea.

China started building up Johnson South Reef in the disputed Spratly Islands chain in December 2013. The island, which took four months to complete, has 27 acres of land and includes a harbor. This reef was the first of several man-made islands that China has created and turned into military bases over the last five years.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s analysis website The Strategist wrote the following about this anniversary (emphasis added throughout):

It has been just five years since China initiated its major land reclamation in the South China Sea, and the country has already shifted the territorial status quo in its favor—without facing any international pushback. The anniversary of the start of its island-building underscores the transformed geopolitics in a corridor central to the international maritime order.

A third of maritime trade passes through the South China Sea. By creating military bases in the middle of this key area, China ideally positions itself not only to ensure the flow of goods to and from the Chinese mainland, but also to cut off enormous amounts of trade to and from other nations, crippling their economies.

Part of the South China Sea is officially international waters, but sovereignty over the majority of it is hotly contested, with five countries claiming some part of it.

Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry said in a 2015 Key of David program: “[T]he U.S. has dominated that area since World War ii. Now China is challenging them openly before the world, saying, ‘We’re going to dominate this area now.’ And nobody is stopping it.”

That was just two years after China started building these islands. Nations have had more time to come up with a response. What is the situation today? The Strategist wrote:

Consequently, China has turned its contrived historical claims to the South China Sea into reality and gained strategic depth, despite a 2016 ruling by an international arbitral tribunal invalidating those claims. China’s leaders seem intent on proving the old adage that possession is nine-tenths of the law. And the world, it seems, is letting them get away with it.

A United Nations tribunal ruled in 2016 that these islands do not belong to China. Yet the Chinese have kept building, and despite the very clear ruling, no one has done much to stop them.

Long before China began building its first island, it was making careful calculations to see if it would be able to get away with it. China’s efforts started small. First it seized Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines in 2012 and waited to see what America would do. No response. Then, China publicized its plans for man-made islands in the South China Sea and circulated them on Chinese news sites. No response. China dispatched a destroyer to one of the contested reefs for three weeks. No response.

With each of these escalations, China might have halted its efforts if the U.S. had responded with strength. Instead, the U.S. remained silent, except for the occasional gentle slap on the wrist. The Strategist wrote: “As China has continued to build and militarize islands, it has taken a calibrated approach, gradually ramping up its activities, while keeping an eye on the U.S. reaction. The final two years of the Obama presidency were marked by frenzied construction.”

China took advantage of American inaction during the Obama years to get established in this vital area. Now it has new islands holding military bases, warehouses, anti-aircraft missiles and airstrips. It would have been relatively easy to confront China back in 2012 or 2013 when it was conducting those initial tests; but now, it would probably take a full-scale war to kick China out and return things to the way they were in 2012. The Strategist wrote:

[F]rom its newly built perches in the South China Sea, China is better positioned not only to sustain air and sea patrols in the region, but also to advance its strategy of projecting power across the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific. How can there be any hope of a free and open Indo-Pacific when the critical corridor linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans is increasingly dominated by the world’s largest autocracy?

That is an excellent point. As Jeremiah Jacques wrote in the August 2017 issue of the Trumpet,Congratulations, Beijing. The South China Sea Is Now Yours.”

China’s moves in the region will affect everyone, not just those in East Asia. Mr. Flurry drew attention to this in a powerful article titled “China Is Steering the World Toward War” in the July 2016 issue. He explained that during World War ii, Japan wanted to control shipping through Asia, so it targeted the South China Sea, the same body of water that China now controls. Mr. Flurry wrote:

The Allied victory over Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in World War ii was greatly aided by the fact that they controlled the world’s most strategic sea-gates, like Panama, Gibraltar and Singapore. In the decades since, however, China and the European Union have come to possess most of the world’s sea-gates.

Time will prove that this is a deadly dangerous change! …

By building artificial islands atop coral reefs in the Spratlys, and installing surface-to-air missile batteries in the Paracels, China is building a new strategic sea-gate. After passing through the Strait of Malacca, oil tankers and other ships pass between the Spratly and Paracel Islands on the way through the South China Sea.

The Bible has quite a bit to say about the importance of straits, capes and other sea-gates. In Genesis 22:16-18, God promised Abraham that his descendants would possess the “gate of his enemies.” Rebekah, Abraham’s daughter-in-law, was told, “[B]e thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them” (Genesis 24:60). Those “gates” refer to sea-gates—important maritime choke points like the Panama Canal and the South China Sea.

These prophecies were fulfilled when America and Britain inherited the birthright blessings in the early 1800s. Between them, these two powers controlled every major sea-gate around the world, resulting in huge economic and military advantages.

However, America and Britain have lost their worldwide preeminence because of their national sins. The sea-gates they once controlled are in the hands of their enemies, which is exactly what the Bible prophesied. In Deuteronomy 28, God told Israel that if they didn’t obey Him, their enemies would rise above them.

Deuteronomy 29:52 describes the modern descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh being besieged “in all thy gates.” In Ezekiel 4:1-3, God told Ezekiel to warn Israel about a coming siege. However, Israel was already in captivity when Ezekiel was written. Why would he warn that nation about a forthcoming siege when they had already been besieged, lost and enslaved? Mr. Flurry points out in Ezekiel: The End-Time Prophet that Ezekiel’s warning is for the modern-day descendants of ancient Israel. He writes, “Here is pictured a siege against the house of Israel. It is a prophecy that one third of these nations will be destroyed economically and socially by a siege!”

When these prophecies were written, sea-gates were not nearly as important as they are today. At that time, most trade was conducted over land. Today, however, 90 percent of the world’s trade is by sea. In the United Kingdom, 95 percent of the products we use come from overseas, according to the Maritime Foundation. Most of our food and oil comes from overseas. That’s an astonishing amount of commerce.

Probably most of the products you own and the raw materials to make those products traveled across an ocean or a sea at some point. Whatever device you are reading this on was probably made in China. If it wasn’t, components inside it probably were, and probably traveled through a sea-gate at some point. Probably some or all of what you are wearing right now was transported across an ocean. For example, the tie I’m wearing today was made in China, and my shoes were made in Italy. One of the books in front of me was printed in the United States.

If you don’t believe me, check out marinetraffic.com. This fascinating website shows you the live location of all the ships at sea around the world right now. You can clearly see that they are concentrated at the world’s sea-gates—Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Panama Canal, etc.

America and Britain once controlled all of these sea-gates, but no longer. A couple decades ago, America would have responded forcefully to China’s aggressive island-building in the South China Sea. Instead, it has let China’s actions slide. America’s economic and military supremacy has slipped out of its grasp.

Prophecy is being fulfilled before our eyes. The five-year anniversary of China’s island-building reinforces that truism. It is living proof of America’s weak will.

Herbert W. Armstrong wrote about this exact situation in his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy. If you have not read that book, I urge you to request it or read it online. It explains the biblical identities of the United States and Britain, which are vital for understanding end-time prophecy. Near the beginning of the book, Mr. Armstrong wrote: “This very eye-opening, astounding identity is the strongest proof of the inspiration and authority of the Holy Bible! It is, at the same time, the strongest proof of the very active existence of the living God!”

You need to read this book. It brings the Bible alive as a book for our time right now. It describes history and current events with remarkable clarity, and teaches us about the great and majestic God whose Word never fails. The United States and Britain in Prophecy and all the rest of our literature are available here on our website—absolutely free, with no cost or obligation to you.

Russia and China Threaten America With New Missiles

Two emerging superpowers prepare for World War iii.

Russia successfully tested its hypersonic Zircon antiship missile on December 10 for the 12th time, setting a speed record. A few weeks earlier on November 24, China successfully tested its JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile, which can strike anywhere in the United States from within Chinese waters. Both developments represent a major step forward in Russia’s and China’s capability to threaten American military dominance.

Russia’s 3M22 Zircon was one of six hypersonic missiles unveiled by President Vladimir Putin during his annual address to Russians on March 1. It has now undergone five flight tests since 2015 and could be ready for combat deployment by 2022.

The threat posed by the Zircon lies primarily in its speed and potential maneuverability. Its scramjet reaches hypersonic speeds: The missile topped its previous speed record by reaching Mach 8 in the latest test. The missile can also execute unpredictable sharp turns, helping it to evade current defense systems. In addition, a plasma cloud forms around the missile when it reaches top speed, potentially reducing or eliminating the missile’s visibility on radar. Although it is possible that the Zircon might not be as advanced as the Russian government indicates, U.S. analysts are taking the missile’s threat to carriers and other warships very seriously.

Prior to the Russian test, China test-fired a JL-3 from a submarine in the Bohai Sea. The submarine-launched ballistic missile has the range to strike anywhere on the American mainland, a massive improvement over its predecessor. It is intended for use on China’s next generation of nuclear submarines, which are to begin sea trials by 2022.

The JL-3’s predecessor, the JL-2, is still China’s current submarine-launched ballistic missile. When first deployed, it was hailed as “China’s first credible, sea-based nuclear deterrent,” according to an American Department of Defense report published this year. However, it still had major limitations. With a range of over 4,000 miles, it required Chinese subs to venture further away from the mainland and closer to danger in the event of war. By comparison, the JL-3 has an estimated range of up to 8,700 miles.

For decades, the Trumpet has forecast and monitored the transformation of Russia’s and China’s previously feeble militaries into forces that can challenge American supremacy. In addition to each nation’s ongoing militarization, the two have also dramatically increased their cooperation over the past decade. These developments align exactly with the forecast given by the Trumpet’s source for understanding world events: Bible prophecy.

Prophecies in Revelation 9 and Ezekiel 38 point to a time when war will engulf the entire world. They reveal that Russia will form a brief but powerful alliance with China and other Asian nations. These “kings of the east,” as they are called in Scripture (Revelation 16:12), will first play a role in bringing down American dominance. God will then use this powerful alliance to fight the other emerging world superpower: a German-led Europe. In his booklet The Prophesied ‘Prince of Russia,’ Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote:

Around a.d. 90, the Apostle John recorded an amazing prophecy: “And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them” (Revelation 9:16). That means an army of 200 million men! That is more people than were alive in the world when that prophecy was recorded. This is an end-time prophecy that we are certain to see fulfilled very soon.

The Bible gives some important details about this largest army ever assembled on Earth. It tells us which nations will contribute soldiers to it. It shows it will include the combined forces from several Asian nations. It refers to this Asian confederacy as “the kings of the east” (Revelation 16:12).

In Russia’s and China’s military rise, we are seeing the step-by-step fulfillment of Bible prophecy. In the years ahead, this will engulf the world in war. Yet these events point not only to mankind’s greatest time of suffering, but also to mankind’s greatest hope. The same Bible that prophesies the emergence of Russia and China, the fall of the United States, and the eruption of World War iii also prophesies that these events will occur immediately prior to the global abolition of warfare.
