‘Shame on You!’

America has a lot to be ashamed of. Confirming Brett Kavanaugh is not one of them.

“Shame! Shame! Shame!” That was the angry chant of leftist protesters directed toward United States senators. What had they done that was so shameful? Confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

America has a lot to be ashamed of, but not this.

In order to confirm President Donald Trump’s appointment, Senate Republicans needed almost every last vote. People were scrutinizing which Republicans might defect—including Susan Collins of Maine. In 2014, she was the first Republican senator ever to be reelected while publicly supporting homosexual “marriage,” and she received a 90 percent score from a league of abortionists. Last year, she received an award from the largest American abortion organization, and the New York Times ranked her as the most liberal Republican. Opponents of Kavanaugh hoped Collins would vote against his confirmation based on her political views.

On Friday, Collins announced her decision in a 43-minute speech on the Senate floor. She reviewed Kavanaugh’s judicial record, showing that he was not a radical, then addressed the accusations that Kavanaugh committed sexual misconduct 36 years ago when he was a teenager, allegations that have proved unsubstantiated, unprovable, even outlandish. “That such an allegation can find its way into the Supreme Court confirmation process is a stark reminder about why the presumption of innocence is so ingrained in our American consciousness,” she said.

Collins’s case was sound and well reasoned. The response against her was not. The Women’s March called her a “rape apologist.” Twitter users said they wanted to punch her in the face, demanded that others prevent her from ever having a moment of peace in public for the rest of her life, and hoped someone would kill her.

When West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin announced outside his office that he would be the lone Democrat to vote yes to Kavanaugh, he could barely be heard over the shouts of protesters. Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz was chased out of a Washington, D.C., restaurant by an angry mob shouting, “We believe survivors!” Supposed justice-seekers have “doxed” senators and their family members, revealing names, addresses and phone numbers online for the purpose of enabling people to harass them. Someone sent Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner and his wife a graphic video of a beheading.

This is the vile, violent vitriol that the left has unleashed against Brett Kavanaugh and anyone who supports him. The reaction of leftists has been a picture of shocking lawlessness and mob mentality. And the shouts go on: “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

Leftists had no constitutional reason, no compelling reason, no logical reason to block Kavanaugh. They pronounce shame on him and his supporters for political reasons. Shame that he believes in the rule of law. Shame that he believes in the Constitution—the document that establishes the Supreme Court in the first place. Shame that he acknowledges that judges and justices should not try to take over the job of elected legislators. Shame that he says that justices should not bend the law to suit their own agenda.

Shame on Senator Manchin and on Republicans for upholding the rule of law! Shame on Manchin for not politicizing his vote—shame on him for not ignoring the evidence before him and simply voting like a sheep along with his party to oppose the president, regardless of Brett Kavanaugh’s qualifications! Shame on him for not destroying a man because a woman made an unsubstantiated accusation against him. Shame on anyone who didn’t simply “believe women,” accept everything his accusers said at face value, and presume his guilt!

If you think that people—at least if they are conservatives or men—should not be torn down based on unprovable accusations, then shame on you!

Such pathetic “reasoning” has besieged an alarming proportion of America. These wacky sentiments being screamed by protesters are being cheered on by the Democratic Party and the mainstream news media.

It is true we need a sense of shame in America.

The dictionary defines shame as “a painful emotion caused by consciousness of guilt, shortcoming or impropriety.” Americans have guilt, shortcomings and impropriety. We should be conscious of those and ashamed by them. But upholding the rule of law and the United States Constitution is not one of those evils to be ashamed of.

Let’s talk about shame.

Causes of Real Shame

Let’s talk about abortion. Leftists are panicky and outraged that Kavanaugh’s vote on the Supreme Court may lead to overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion. Leftists are committed to the sacrosanct doctrine that women can use their sexuality however they want, get pregnant, then kill their unborn children if they find them to be inconvenient. They have become convicted that any effort to deny women this right must be stopped at all costs.

When Hillary Clinton ran for president the first time in 2008, she said that her consistent policy for at least 15 years had been for abortion to be “safe, legal and rare—and by rare, I mean rare.” She said she wanted to reduce the number of abortions.

A short decade later, this talking point has been replaced by a loud, angry demand for “women’s rights.” Neither Clinton nor anyone else on the left speaks about why abortion should be rare. There is no mainstream discussion about the anguish suffered by women who have abortions, or there even being a moral dimension to this question. Abortion clinics downplay negative information and encourage abortion. They don’t counsel women about the seriousness of the choice—they try to get them in and out as quickly as possible, concerned only about profit. In fact, reports have surfaced of representatives of tissue-procurement companies pressuring women sitting in abortion-clinic waiting rooms to donate their babies’ body parts for research!

Our culture has grown so coarse and callous that American women have undergone more than 716,000 abortions so far this year.

Leftists ominously warned that if Brett Kavanaugh were confirmed to the Supreme Court, “millions of people will die.” Here is a statistic of millions of people dying: Since Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood and other abortion mills have killed more than 60.7 million unborn babies (AbortionClock.org).

This is something Americans should feel genuine shame over.

Let’s talk about sexual conduct. Christine Blasey Ford claimed that a 17-year-old Brett Kavanaugh had gotten drunk at a party and jumped on her on a bed before she escaped. She did not claim that he raped her, or even came close. Nevertheless, Democrats insisted that this incident should disqualify Kavanaugh from ever serving on the Supreme Court. We must set the bar very high when it comes to sexual conduct and respecting women, they insisted.

Of course we should set the bar very high regarding sexual conduct and respecting women and public office. It is shameful how low our moral standards have dropped. But what is troubling here—apart from the fact that we should also set the bar very high on discerning whether a serious accusation is truthful—is the shameless hypocrisy of leftists.

The leftists piled on Kavanaugh, universally accepting Ford’s accusation as truth and treating it as a career-ending crime. They shamed those who disbelieved. usa Today sports reporter Erik Brady wrote that Kavanaugh shouldn’t even coach basketball, let alone join the Supreme Court: “[C]redibly accused sex offenders should not coach youth basketball, girls or boys, without deeper investigation. Can’t we all agree on that?”

During the hearings, Democratic senators questioned Kavanaugh in detail about his sexual activities as a teenager and his consumption of beer. They studiously played the part of strict moralists, deeply troubled by any whiff of indecency.

In truth, these same people are passionate advocates of sexual license! Liberal politicians have enthusiastically led America into safeguarding, legalizing and promoting pornography, fornication, adultery, misogyny and mind-altering drugs. Their allies in the film and television industry make millions off of entertainment that objectifies women for the purpose of arousing lust. The music industry is saturated with songs sexualizing, objectifying and debasing women. Some of these stars perform these appalling songs at Democratic campaign functions! The pornography industry routinely portrays women being horrifically brutalized and abused. University professors and students publicly branded Kavanaugh as a sex offender, yet these same universities host licentious, perverse, sexually themed events for students, who participate with abandon.

Shame! This is something that should shame Americans! This is something we should be protesting!

Reports are increasingly filling our news media of American schoolchildren being indoctrinated with homosexual propaganda. The same is true in Britain, where a recent bbc story showed a teacher of 6-year-olds having them write love letters to same-sex partners! “You’re Prince Henry,” she said, “you’re going to tell Thomas why it’s a brilliant idea for him to marry you.”

That is shameful! That is something that should provoke painful emotions!

A couple of days ago as I was flipping between news stations, my attention was arrested for a moment on a reality show where a group of friends discussed where they should go for a road trip. One said she had the perfect spot: New Orleans. Why? Because there they could get as drunk as they wanted and never get kicked out of a bar. There they could urinate or vomit in the street and never get arrested or even draw much attention. The group of 10 or so friends cheered wildly at this idea!

Shame! That—and the whole gutter culture it represents—is something Americans should be ashamed of.

Where Is America’s Sense of Shame?

America has a lot to be ashamed about. And it’s not constitutional judges being dubiously accused by politically motivated opponents—it’s our sins that should shame us!

We are all sinners. If you are avoiding, fighting and overcoming sin, that is one thing. But Americans today are reveling in it, embracing it and celebrating it—then turning around and shouting that others should be ashamed!

What sickness in America the Kavanaugh confirmation exposed! Leftists—neck-deep in immorality—have appropriated the language of morality and righteousness. They have instituted their immorality as the new orthodoxy. They have instituted their own definitions of righteousness. And by these manufactured standards, they judge, denounce, punish and condemn.

The Apostle Paul prophesied in Romans 10:3: “[T]hey being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”

Does this not perfectly describe America in 2018? If so, shame on us.
