EU Steps Up Mission in Kosovo

The true conqueror of the Balkans takes control now that NATO and the U.S. have finished the dirty work.

The United Nations is stepping aside to make way for the European Union in Kosovo.

In 1999, the EU, with the aid of the United States and nato, wrenched the province of Kosovo away from Serbian control. Since that time, Kosovo has been governed by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (unmik), though it is now considered officially independent in the eyes of most Western nations.

On August 18, however, the United Nations signed a deal with the European Union enabling the handover of unmik office space and vehicles to the EU’s mission known as eulex.

This transfer of authority from the UN to the EU is being protested by Serbia, which says it constitutes a breach of international law. The reason for this opposition is that the European Union backs Kosovo independence. As the UN transfers more and more authority to the EU, the chance for Serbia to reconcile with its rebel province disappears.

The German-led EU coerced nato into helping it dismember the former nation of Yugoslavia. Now that Yugoslavia is in this broken state, the European Union is moving to annex each of its seven pieces. The U.S. and nato may have done a lot of the messy initial work, but at the end of the day it is the EU that will be the conqueror and administrator of the Balkans.
