European Commission President Again Calls for Stronger Ties With China

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday said the Continent needs to deepen trade ties and “find agreements” with China in “an era of hyper-competitive and hyper-transactional geopolitics.”

This marked the second time in two weeks she has called for closer ties with China.

I think we can find agreements that could even expand our trade and investment ties. [I]t can lead us to a fairer and more balanced relationship with one of the world’s economic giants. And that can make sense for Europe.
—Ursula von der Leyen

Facing global challenges: The same day, China’s Foreign Ministry said it was willing to work with the European Union to respond to “global challenges.”

The world is facing the risk of division, fragmentation and disorder. China-EU relations have all the more strategic importance and global influence. … We hope the EU can become a cooperation partner that China can trust.
—Lin Jian, Foreign Ministry spokesperson

Tariffs: In recent months, trade tensions between the two had escalated as the EU imposed double-digit tariffs on Chinese imports of electric vehicles. But now, as both China and the EU face tariff threats from the United States, the powers are showing signs of willingness to rethink their relationship.

Mart of nations: Expect Europe and China to overcome their differences and ally economically. Bible prophecy shows these two will team up in a “mart of nations” and freeze the U.S. out of world trade.
