Meta’s ‘MAGA Makeover’

Why is Meta shifting its political allegiance?

Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg announced on January 7 that Facebook and Instagram are making major changes to the way they censor content. The social media sites will do away with third-party fact-checkers and encourage more political content.

These changes have outraged liberals. Many are saying the platforms will be flooded with “hate speech” and “disinformation.” The duke and duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, said the shift in policy “directly undermines free speech.” Some Meta users are boycotting the social media sites, while others are saying they feel “trapped” on the platforms because they want to leave but are too dependent on them.

“It’s time to get back to our roots around free expression on Facebook and Instagram,” Zuckerberg said in a video posted on Facebook. “Fact-checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created.”

Meta’s American-based fact-checkers will be removed from the sites and replaced by a community notes system, similar to X, where users themselves can fact-check posts, Zuckerberg explained. He also said Meta will “get rid of a bunch of restrictions on topics like immigration and gender that are just out of touch with mainstream discourse.” He then added that Meta will “work with President [Donald] Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more.”

“The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point toward once again prioritizing speech,” Zuckerberg said.

President Trump’s return to the White House has been cited as a major reason for Meta’s transformation. Critics claim the company is shifting its policies to cozy up to Trump. Telegraph journalist Marianka Swain said Zuckerberg’s “2025 slogan might as well be Make Facebook Great Again.” Others are calling it a “maga makeover.”

These changes are a major shift from how Zuckerberg and these social media sites approached politics, censorship and news in the past. In 2020, Zuckerberg and his wife donated $419 million to staff the 2020 election with far-left activists in the name of promoting safe and reliable voting. In his book Save America, published in September 2024, President Trump wrote that Zuckerberg would “spend the rest of his life in prison” if he tried to interfere again in the 2024 presidential election. In a Truth Social post earlier that year, Trump called Facebook “a true enemy of the people!”

After the Jan. 6, 2021, protests, Facebook and Instagram suspended President Trump’s accounts, saying his posts praised people who “engaged in violence at the Capitol,” a key propaganda point for leftist media. Those suspensions weren’t lifted until July 2024.

In 2023, open-source investigator @NameRedacted247 found Meta had been hiring former government intelligence officials for five years. At that point, Meta employed 160 former agents from at least six different government departments. As Trumpet writer Andrew Miiller explained in “The Obama Media Empire Strikes Back,” media outlets were hiring former officials from Barack Obama’s administration to promote his agenda of “fundamentally transforming America”—they were a part of the “deep state’s” control over information.

In August 2024, Zuckerberg admitted in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee that his company had caved to pressure from Joe Biden’s administration to censor content on topics such as covid-19 and Hunter Biden’s laptop.

These are just a few ways Zuckerberg used Meta to support the left. So why this sudden shift right?

The Bible gives a clue.

For years, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has explained that former President Obama fulfills a prophetic role as an end-time Antiochus type. Connecting Daniel 8 with prophecies in 2 King 14 and Amos 7, Mr. Flurry said Obama brought “bitter affliction” on America, but now God is temporarily saving the nation through Donald Trump—and He is silencing Obama.

Referring to a prophecy in Amos 7, Mr. Flurry wrote in the September 2024 Trumpet:

[I]t is conspicuous that [Obama] is never mentioned directly in the prophecy, though that is exactly who it is talking about. Why the omission?

I have come to realize that the reason God does not mention this modern-day type of Antiochus in this passage is that He is beginning to silence this man! Barack Obama’s power is diminishing before our eyes.

The devil was using this man to do terrible things to the United States of America and even to a number of the other nations that have descended from ancient Israel. Mr. Obama has had control of Hollywood, academia, media, technocrats and powerful corporations. These have helped him and his army “cast down the truth to the ground” (Daniel 8:12). In a related prophecy in 2 Kings 14:26, his destructive work is forecast to wreak bitter affliction on the nation!

Barack Obama has wielded so much power—during his presidency, against Donald Trump’s presidency, and through Joe Biden’s illegitimate presidency. God is deeply bothered by how Satan used this man to destroy America from the inside! And now, He has begun to put a stop to it. That man is going down fast; he is being exposed and silenced!

The media was a major tool for Obama to suppress truth and publicize his radical agenda. But media outlets like Meta are no longer giving him that power.

After Trump was shot in the ear by an assassin in July, Zuckerberg called him and—according to Trump—told him: “I’ve never supported a Republican before, but there’s no way I can vote for a Democrat in this election. I will never vote for the people running against you after watching what you did.”

When Trump won the 2024 election, Zuckerberg requested to visit Mar-a-Lago to discuss “the incoming administration.” The evening before Thanksgiving, Zuckerberg dined with Trump and the two “largely exchanged pleasantries,” according to a statement from Meta.

On January 20, Zuckerberg—along with multiple other tech giants like Google ceo Sundar Pichai, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple ceo Tim Cook and X ceo Elon Musk—stood behind President Trump during his inauguration.

Meta’s change in policy doesn’t mean everything posted on its sites will now be completely true. Nor does it mean the left will no longer have a platform to voice its opinion. It is simply a step toward free speech and less government control. It is another way Obama is losing his influence.
