German Health Ministry Prepares for War

Germany must be better prepared not only for future pandemics but also “for major disasters and possible military conflicts,” German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung on March 2.

After the criminal Russian attack on Ukraine, this challenge has unfortunately become more important. And that’s why we have a gap in the law that we are addressing to be prepared for a disaster or even a military alliance case—as unlikely as it is. … Doing nothing is not an option. We also need a turnaround for the health-care system. Especially as Germany could become a hub for the care of injured and wounded people from other countries.
—Karl Lauterbach
