U.S. Supports Peace With Houthis

The United States Special Envoy to Yemen called for Yemen’s Houthi rebels to attend peace talks with the Yemeni government on Wednesday. This could lead to a major boon for Iran. Special Envoy Tim Lenderking told reporters in a phone briefing:

We and others in the international community are urging the Houthis to seize this unprecedented opportunity to sit down with the Republic of Yemen government to chart a brighter future for Yemen.

The Houthis are an Iran-backed terrorist group that has controlled much of eastern Yemen for years. They have refused to talk to the government, seeing it as a puppet of Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia is pulling out of Yemen, giving the Iranian proxy legitimacy in the country. Lenderking’s words suggest the U.S. supports this.

Strategic significance: Yemen controls one side of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the Red Sea’s southern exit point. Europe depends on the Red Sea-Mediterranean Sea corridor to trade with Asia without sailing around Africa. Complete control over Yemen could give Iran tremendous leverage in world trade.

The Trumpet wrote:

The Houthi takeover in Yemen proves that Iran is implementing a bold strategy to control the vital sea-lane from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. …

It is not farfetched to see Iran using its power to control the flow of oil out of the Middle East. The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has threatened as much. And on Jan. 17, 2015, the Iranian state-sponsored Tasnim news agency published an article that said boldly: “Today, all the arteries of oil transport—from Bab el-Mandeb strait to Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz—are under Iranian control, by means of Syria, Yemen and Bahrain, and within range of Iranian missiles” (translation memri).

Iran is aggressively securing its foreign holdings along the Red Sea—and boasting about how it could use them!

Yet the United States is apparently allowing Iran free course in an effort to win it over in nuclear negotiations.
