Tornadoes Kill Dozens in Mississippi

Strong thunderstorms and deadly tornadoes swept across Mississippi and Alabama on March 24, leaving a trail of destruction and killing at least 25 people. The tornadoes formed from the same destructive storm system that hit California’s Bay Area on March 21 and produced deadly flooding in the American Southwest. Joe Biden has issued an emergency declaration for Mississippi, making federal funding available to the areas hardest hit.

Record setting: The United States was hit by 168 tornadoes in January and 52 in February, more than any other years except 1999 and 2008. If this trend continues, this year could end up being America’s third-most active tornado season since official record-keeping began in 1950.

Less than 1 percent of tornadoes in the U.S. travel more than 50 miles, so the 60-mile path of destruction left by one recent Mississippi tornado was exceptional.

Unnatural disasters: In Leviticus 26, God promises “rain in due season” and the land yielding its increase—but only if we keep His commandments. Although the weather may seem chaotic and not subject to anyone’s influence, the truth is that if we followed the laws of the Creator, He would intervene to cause beautiful, stable weather. If we depended on God, we would not experience crop failures, famine, drought or deadly tornadoes.
