Colleges Caving to Leftists

American education represents America’s future. And what is happening on university campuses is a shocking shift toward radicalism that threatens to dismantle civilization.

American colleges and universities are about to hold commencement exercises for some 4.8 million students. These graduates will be further to the political left than their parents. Pew Research data indicates that, increasingly, the more college someone has, the further left their thinking becomes. And a growing number of students are embracing radical leftist views.

These institutions have become incubators for leftism, in some shockingly toxic forms. Curricula are becoming politicized and radicalized. Administrators and professors are pushing extremist and bizarre ideas. They fixate on race, sex and class in noxious ways, often in response to demands from activist students.

This trend is nothing to shrug your shoulders over. The more that schools and society permit and encourage this trend, the more damage it will cause. Leftist education is nothing less than a threat to Western civilization.

Today’s leaders—its politicians, chief executives, journalists, commentators and other pacesetters—are yesterday’s university students. To see what the United States is about to become, just look at what our universities are teaching today’s students.

Leftism: The ‘Consensus’ Ideology

Professors have been politically left of the average American for decades, but in recent years, the gap between the two has dramatically widened. In the late 1960s, about 43 percent of U.S. college professors self-identified as left of center. Around 2001, that number began to shoot up, increasing to 60 percent by 2016. Between 2001 and 2010, those identifying as “far left” more than doubled, according the American Institute for Economic Research (May 1).

Meanwhile, faculty considering themselves right of center fell from 28 percent in the late 1960s to 22 percent in 1995 to 12 percent today. The institute attributed this shift to retirements and “an emerging bias in faculty hiring.” Today, America’s self-proclaimed “far left” professors roughly equal the total number right of center.

Higher education “is skewed heavily toward a single ‘consensus’ ideology,” the institute wrote. This is particularly true in certain fields of study. “Professors in the humanities and social sciences skew much further to the left than the physical sciences,” the institute wrote. “Over 80 percent of English professors, for example, identify on the political left. Subjects such as history, political science, sociology, and fine arts typically approach or exceed 70 percent.” It happens that these college departments are growing, with faculty hirings in the humanities outpacing those in science and engineering.

Students attending leftist-dominated universities are emerging as converted, even radical, leftists, socialists and Marxists. And predictably, leftist ideology is spreading into high schools and even grade schools. Based on political campaign contributions, teachers constitute one of the most liberal professions in the nation.

The University of Michigan has nearly 100 “diversity administrators,” a quarter of whom earn six-figure salaries. An economics professor at the school recently calculated that they cost the university around $14 million annually, Forbes reported. Such administrative bloat is common: It has actually become normal in universities to have more administrators than full-time faculty.

What do all these diversity professionals do? They search for injustice. They snoop out racism and bigotry. And they find it—in society, in history, in their schools’ curricula, on their own campuses. Everywhere they look, they find evidence of inequity that demonstrates how important their own jobs are.

In Britain, a new report from Universities UK says colleges must “decolonize” their curricula and become “racially diverse and inclusive environments” to ensure that minority students perform as well as their white peers. There has been a push to increase diversity on campuses by admitting more minorities. But when admissions officers prioritize skin color over scholastic achievement, they end up with students unequipped to meet academic demands. When these students underperform, these educators blame, not their own racial quotas, but the supposedly racially biased curricula. They want to ensure that black, Asian and minority ethnic students graduate with top degrees by making schools’ teaching less white, male and Euro-centric.

Cambridge University in Britain just announced it will conduct a two-year inquiry by two post-doctoral researchers from its Centre of African Studies to determine the degree to which the institution profited from the slave trade. “Glasgow University, which carried out a similar, smaller, exercise last year, found that it had benefited to the tune of almost £200 million [us$260.2 million] and would be undertaking a program of ‘reparative justice.’ It includes creating a center for the study of slavery,” the Times reported (April 30). Such projects are underway in colleges and universities everywhere throughout the U.S. and Britain.

So these students learn that they can blame their academic failures on institutional racism. In literature classes, they skip Chaucer and Shakespeare in favor of women, people of color and queer authors. In history, they learn how America’s founders were slave-owners and rapists. Encouraged by well-paid diversity administrators, they are overturning tradition, speaking out and demanding change.

At Hofstra University, students have defaced a statue of Thomas Jefferson with “decolonize” and “Black Lives Matter” signs and stickers. The statue represents “a legacy of racism and bigotry on college campuses,” according to the student president of Hofstra College Democrats. The student group Jefferson Has Gotta Go is also demanding “an online, bias reporting system, an online complaint receipt program, and mandated, comprehensive, cultural competency training.”

Such stories are routine. Radicalized students are attacking American history. They are vandalizing statues. They are using threats to silence free speech. They are demanding resignations. They are marching and demonstrating with violent rhetoric—and violent actions.

The American Institute for Economic Research article stated: “Multiple surveys suggest that students outside of the progressive left self-censor their beliefs on campus, fearing both viewpoint discrimination and bias from faculty in grading. Recent empirical studies of faculty in psychology and law also reveal evidence of actual discrimination against viewpoints that fall outside of the progressive umbrella, particularly in academic hiring.”

Claiming to fight for tolerance and freedom, leftism uses intimidation, bullying and mob rule in an attempt to gain power. And with that power, it uses coercion, authoritarianism and tyranny.

A vivid example of just how far awry this trend can go occurred recently at The Evergreen State College, a public liberal arts school in Washington State that is one of the most leftist colleges in the country.

Evergreen: A Cautionary Tale

Filmmaker Mike Nayna told this story in a recent documentary. A few years ago, Evergreen’s president George Bridges began a program to “advance diversity” on campus. He told the college faculty, “I established and charged this equity council—this incredible equity council—with developing a plan for institutional change, systemic change, that would enable Evergreen to acknowledge and address the equity gaps that are pervasive on our campus.”

The “equity council” wanted control over hirings, over which individuals could be hired to which positions—and which positions existed in the first place.

In one of the council’s first staff meetings, one instructor said, “It will take many hands to do this, to unscrew the structure of institutional racism.” Another organizer had attendees come to the front of the room and form what he called a “canoe,” a visual demonstration of getting everyone on board with their plan for campus social justice. He organized them in rows as if in an enormous canoe. College administrators joined the group, but the organizer told them to step back out, saying, “You have to ask for permission and commit some things before boarding the canoe.”

What followed was a series of self-punishing apologies and pledges from white-skinned faculty members: “I would like to board the canoe because I’m committed to enhancing and furthering inclusion and equity on our campus …” and so forth. One female student emotionally stated, “I am here because I refuse to continue to be assimilated. I refuse! And I refuse to let whiteness consume me. And I’m going to say that word explicitly: whiteness!”

Such obsequiousness and self-loathing is exactly what “cultural competency training” is meant to produce.

This documentary features excerpts of a lecture to Evergreen faculty given by Robin DiAngelo, whose academic title is Scholar of Whiteness Studies. Here is how this white woman defined racism: “Structural, institutionalized inequality—or racism. An anti-racist frame understands racism as a system. While individual players partake in it, it’s not dependent on individual players. It’s embedded in the fabric of the society, in all the institutions, the norms, the practices, the policies, the way that history’s told. And it functions to ensure an unequal distribution of basically everything between people of color as a whole and white people as a whole.”

By that extraordinary definition of racism, no white person can escape. If you are white, you are guilty. If you think you are not, here is what DiAngelo has to say to you about that notion: “I can’t emphasize this enough: This is not useful. Just get rid of it. It is not possible to avoid being socialized into a racist worldview if you’re white. It’s not possible. It’s coming at us 24-7. The only way to resist it is to be able to see it and think it through. So to deny it is not going to help you.”

Evergreen’s equity council sponsored lectures and activities to educate students and faculty on how to detect all the racism at the college. And they found lots of racism. The harder they looked, the more they found. In fact, they managed to conclude that The Evergreen State College was actually a bastion of white supremacy. They found that this college—one of the most leftist colleges of all the leftist colleges in this country—was systematically destroying “people of color.”

A biology professor at the college, Bret Weinstein, was alarmed by these developments. “There were all these allegations about white supremacy at Evergreen. And every so often, somebody—sometimes it was me, sometimes it was somebody else—asked, OK: Where is this white supremacy? Can we see it? Can we evaluate it?” He raised the question at one staff meeting, and here is how, in his words, a black faculty member responded: “To ask students who are suffering from white supremacy to tell us about instances of white supremacy is itself racism. And she said we must stop asking them, because we are inflicting harm on them asking for evidence. And the phrase she used—she said, To ask for evidence of racism is racism with a capital R.”

The message the students received was clear. What, then, were they to do? Once their eyes had been “opened” to all the white supremacy and institutional injustice against “black and brown bodies” at the college, were they not obligated to stand up for themselves? Using whatever means necessary?

Reeducation—Then Punishment

In March 2017, racial minorities at Evergreen made a shocking request: They wanted a day in which, in the words of the student newspaper, the Cooper Point Journal, “all white faculty and students remain absent from campus, leaving the space free for community members of color.”

Professor Weinstein e-mailed the faculty director of First Peoples Multicultural Advising Services calling this demand “an act of oppression.” He refused to leave campus for being white. Word of his dissent and obstructionism got out. Soon after, a mob of about 50 angry students besieged Weinstein and shouted obscenities at him every time he tried to explain himself.

Someone called the police, but the students blocked officers from entering the building. When police found another way in, the students left and went after the college president. Weinstein ended up having to hold his class off campus because police couldn’t guarantee his safety.

President Bridges agreed to a meeting with the protesters later that day. Video emerged online of that raucous, profanity-laced “meeting.” The students behaved like barbarian children, pitching fits, exhibiting unbridled emotion, anger and hatred. Anytime one of the administrators or faculty tried to respond, the students shouted them down and screamed at them.

After the meeting, a coalition of black students issued a set of demands. Among them was a demand that the video of the event be taken down. They said it had been “stolen by white supremacists and edited to expose and ridicule the students and staff.” Other demands included the disarmament of campus police; the firing or suspension without pay of Weinstein and other faculty members; “mandatory sensitivity and cultural competency training for faculty, staff, administrators and student employees”; the permanent hiring of a “Trans & Queer Center” coordinator; and “the creation of a permanent position that will support undocumented students.”

President Bridges treated these students’ deranged demands as if they were reasonable and fair. He meekly agreed to some of them. Over the negotiating table he proffered something of a half-hearted defense of free speech, but when one of the students pushed back, he said this: “They’re going to say some things that we don’t like, and our job is to bring them all in—or get them out. What I hear us stating that we are working toward is, bring ‘em in, train ‘em, and if they don’t get it, sanction ‘em.”

He was describing political reeducation—and if that failed, punishment. This is authoritarianism, pure and simple.

The Evergreen students took control of the college. At one point they were stopping cars entering and leaving campus, apparently looking for Weinstein. When he rode his bike to campus to teach that day, he was told he wasn’t safe on or off campus, and that he should at least go home and get in his car—which would offer some protection in case the mob caught up to him.

Why did these students want to commit violence against Weinstein? His “crime” was simply to disagree with their coercive methods. Yet in their minds, this mild-mannered, politically liberal college professor came to embody the racism they had become convinced was endangering their lives.

This is absolutely unhinged thinking. In the thrall of radical racial justice illogic, The Evergreen State College rapidly transformed into an asylum run by the inmates.

First the Campus, Then Society

It is chilling to see students, radicalized and angry, en masse, violently forcing their ill-informed, preposterous views on college authorities. It is chilling to see faculty responding by apologizing and kowtowing, giving in and appeasing this unruly mob. It is chilling to see administrators, in an craven effort to prove their leftist credentials, using their power to coerce and force nonbelievers into compliance.

But in a way, this scenario is playing out society-wide, as leftists bully their way into the mainstream, accuse anyone who opposes them of bigotry, and increasingly gain the support of the media, the courts and the politicians to enforce their views.

Look closely at what is happening on our college campuses. This rot has been fermenting for years, and now it is getting more emotional and, animated by the spirit of the mob, more violent. It shows the extremes to which the intolerance of the radical left is going. This toxic behavior is seeping beyond the “safe spaces” of these campuses. It is affecting high schools, middle schools and even grade schools. It is transforming American workplaces. It is making its way into courtrooms. It is spreading into our politics. It vividly shows how these policies proposed to solve the nation’s problems actually end up creating crises that are many times worse.

“Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied” (Proverbs 27:20). A movement like this can never be satisfied. Appeasing it only fuels it. Fulfill one of the left’s demands, and they return with five more in its place.

The pillars of American society are under determined attack, and they are crumbling.

In this documentary, Professor Weinstein concluded: “I keep being invited to talk about free speech on college campuses, and every time I’m invited I make the same point: This isn’t about free speech, and this is only tangentially about college campuses. This is about a breakdown in the basic logic of civilization, and it’s spreading. College campuses may be the first dramatic battle, but of course, this is going to find its way to the courts. It’s already found its way into the tech sector. It’s going to find its way to the highest levels of governance if we’re not careful. And it actually does jeopardize the ability of civilization to continue to function.”

Britain Suffers Worst Year of Knife Crimes

The solution to Britain’s most deadly year of knife crimes is simpler than most realize.

Knifings killed more people in Britain from March 2017 to March 2018 than any previous one-year period on record. Kim Hjelmgaard reported for usa Today that 285 people in England and Wales were killed by knife-wielding attackers.

Britain’s Office for National Statistics released a crime report on April 25 declaring that police in England and Wales recorded nearly 41,000 crimes involving knives or “sharp instruments” in 2018. Including data from Greater Manchester Police, which had previously recorded knife-related crimes differently, the number of 2018 knife crimes in England and Wales was almost 45,000.

The report also states that 39 percent of British homicides in 2018 resulted from stabbings, more than from any other cause.

Knife crimes in Britain are not limited to homicides. Excluding Manchester data, 46 percent of knife crimes were classified as “assault with injury and assault with intent to cause serious harm.” An additional 43 percent of knife crimes were robberies. Sexual assault and rape accounted for less than 3 percent.

British politicians, parents, police and others are searching urgently for ways to curb the violence. Prime Minister Theresa May called youth violence a “cancer.” Prince Charles referred to knife crime as a “pervasive horror.”

The problem is clear. The solution is elusive.

Several schools in south London are trying to stop the violence by making it harder for students to bring knives onto school grounds. In the boroughs of Lambeth, Wandsworth and Merton, police have set up temporary metal detectors, or “knife arches.”

Speaking of this new measure, chief superintendent for Southwest London Sally Benatar said at the end of April that use of the metal detectors would be enforced for two weeks. “We prioritize effective safeguarding,” she said, “and our school’s officers are working hard to protect and educate our young people in the dangers of carrying knives.”

Attempted solutions go further than school areas. For weeks, police have had extended ability to stop and search individuals for weapons, even without reasonable suspicion. Benatar called these stop-and-search tactics “one of our most effective means of taking dangerous weapons off the street.”

The prime minister promotes these enhanced police powers, but she has acknowledged that knife crime cannot be solved by these means alone. “We cannot simply arrest ourselves out of this problem,” she said. And she is right.

Still, a lasting solution has not been seriously considered. John Apter, national chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, has suggested that more investment into the problem is needed. “The only way that something positive will come out of it is if there’s a genuine investment—not just a few million pounds, this is going to cost many, many millions of pounds, to even think about putting it right.”

Apter went on to criticize Ms. May’s low-cost policies, saying, “What she’s done to policing is unforgivable and she’s now seeing the impact of that.”

Will throwing more money at this deadly issue really fix it? Will a heavier police presence stop people from feeling the need to carry some sort of weapon to either hurt others or simply defend themselves? Will metal detectors dissuade a population that has reached record levels of knife crime?

Taking knives off the street may have limited, temporary success, but it is dealing with an effect, not the cause. These multifarious knife laws don’t stop people from using some other weapon, like acid. The solutions proposed so far fail to address the human nature behind such crimes.

Managing editor of theTrumpet.com Brad Macdonald wrote about this crisis in his article “Solving Britain’s Knife Crime Crisis.” “At its core,” he wrote, “these crimes are the product of an immature, deeply selfish, undisciplined mind.”

For such minds to be changed, there must be a solution that reaches far deeper than governmental legislation. It is not knives that need to be taken away, but the motivation behind knife crimes.

How can this be done?

Only through proper education—from the beginning of childhood on through adulthood—can a person be taught the intrinsic and necessary values that drive away such violent behavior.

This kind of education cannot just come from schools. To be effective, it must be taught in the home!

Notice this insightful passage from Mr. Macdonald’s article:

Ultimately, the job of teaching children discipline and respect for law, of raising children to be responsible members of society, of teaching young people to control their emotions, is a parental responsibility. Doesn’t this mean then that Britain’s knife crime crisis is really a result of family breakdown?

In Britain, more than 40 percent of marriages end in divorce. Many couples simply don’t get married. More than 16 percent of couples living together are unmarried; this is the fastest-growing type of “family” in the country. Meanwhile, 25 percent of British families are single-parent families. More than 90 percent of these single parents are women.

The official statistics are much worse for black families. They clearly show that black children in Britain are significantly more likely to grow up in single-parent homes. The missing parent is nearly always the father. We don’t have the empirical evidence, but circumstantial evidence shows that fatherlessness is the one factor these young criminals have in common.

Research in America shows that a child raised without a father in the home is four times more likely to live in poverty, more likely to suffer emotional and behavioral problems, more likely to go to prison, more likely to commit crime, seven times more likely to get pregnant as a teen, more likely to suffer abuse and neglect, more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, and more likely to drop out of school.

Dr. Tony Sewell is an educational consultant and the ceo of Generating Genius, a charity that helps disaffected young people attend university. He has studied knife crime in Britain and has spoken with many of the young perpetrators, writing about it in the Telegraph and the Guardian. His Aug. 29, 2018, article on the subject is brave, powerful and all too rare.

“… I wanted to know why this issue excessively affects a particular community,” he wrote. “Every boy said that their problems started when their fathers left the home, while others were haunted by the father they never knew. This was also the reality of most of the boys they lived alongside” (emphasis added).

The role of fatherlessness has been mentioned here and there recently, but no one has put it front and center like Dr. Sewell has. Fatherlessness and family breakdown simply aren’t being considered or discussed in any depth or detail.

Yet this is the key reason these boys make the immature, selfishly motivated, undisciplined, violent decision to knife another human!

Notice this shocking statement from Dr. Sewell: “Policymakers and politicians in the UK will not touch this area [fatherlessness]. Even sociologists, who should know better, have run to the mantra of institutional racism to explain the realities of black family breakdown. When I have talked about this issue, I have been accused of ‘blaming the victim’ or ‘letting white people off the hook.’”

Why the refusal to broach this subject? It’s simple really: Because addressing the problem of fatherlessness—and the breakdown of the family in general—will expose the institutionalized contempt Britain’s politicians, intellectuals and cultural influencers have for traditional marriage and family!

Upside-down families—and specifically fatherlessness—are a huge part of the cause! This is what must be addressed in order for Britain to have a chance at solving its knife crimes.

But as Mr. Macdonald says, the policymakers will hardly broach the subject because it goes against their claims that any family situation is a fine one. Father and mother, single parent, two fathers, two mothers, married or unmarried—it has no effect on the outcome of the child, they say.

The book of Hosea describes the results of such thinking: “By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood” (Hosea 4:2). Isn’t that exactly what we see on the streets of Britain?

“Blood touches blood” as Britain experiences more stabbing deaths on its streets than ever.

Britain is reaping the results of the upside-down families that it promotes. Hosea is a book for this end time, addressed to the modern nations of ancient Israel—specifically Ephraim. Read our free book The United States and Britain in Prophecy, by Herbert W. Armstrong, to prove that “Ephraim” in Bible prophecy refers to Britain.

In Hosea, God admonishes the people of Israel—of Britain—to repent of their sins and return to Him. “[T]here is no savior beside me. … O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help” (Hosea 13:4, 9). That is the only way for Britain to solve its ever worsening knife-crime epidemic.

The family, which is the foundation of any society, must be restored to its God-ordained institution. Through godly families, the children who will grow up to be our civilizations’ leaders and citizens will be taught to love their fellow man and to obey the commandments of God. This is what will bring a peaceful, safe and prosperous society.

The End of the Internet as We Know It

Be careful what you tweet for.

We are entering the twilight years of a free Internet. An Internet where anyone can post anything, and anyone can find it and read it. The continued existence of this online freedom (and all the good, the bad and the ugly that it produces) faces a range of threats. The big businesses that choose what most people read are kicking more users off their sites. The freedom the Internet gives is becoming freedom for these big companies to spy on us. But one of the biggest threats to the Internet comes from governments.

Authoritarian governments have always tried to control what people say. If individuals can plan and organize freely, they can plan to overthrow the government. Dictators also tend to control the press. But that’s much less effective if citizens can get online to find the truth.

The sun set on Internet freedom in China a long time ago, and China is now bidding to control crucial pieces of Internet infrastructure far beyond its borders. Last week, the Russian government passed a new law that will tighten the noose on Internet freedom there. The European Union is weaponizing its power to regulate the Internet. The end of the Internet as we know it is nigh.

The Great Firewall

Nearly 1 billion people use the Internet in China, but their Internet is not our Internet. The government blocks many websites. Sites that are allowed, but based outside of China, load more slowly. And the government monitors what you access online: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia and our very own theTrumpet.com are all blocked. Some companies have much more restricted versions of their sites available. It’s all part of what senior fellow Elizabeth Economy, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, called “the largest and most sophisticated online censorship operation in the world.” In 2013, experts estimated over 2 million were employed in online censorship—reading and often deleting social media posts.

Chinese leaders have proved so successful at blocking news it doesn’t want their people to see, that this expertise has become one of the latest “Made in China” exports.

“China, in other words, appears to be floating the first competitive alternative to the open Internet—a model that it is steadily proliferating around the world,” Samm Sacks, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, wrote in the Atlantic last year. “As that model spreads, whether through Beijing’s own efforts or through the model’s inherent appeal for certain developing countries with more similarities to China than the West, we cannot take for granted that the Internet will remain a place of free expression where open markets can flourish.”

“Chinese partners like Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt engage in aggressive online content control,” wrote Sacks. Foreign Policy wrote last year, “Across sub-Saharan Africa, free expression is being unjustly curtailed, and the Internet is increasingly being used by authorities to censor and surveil citizens.” Often Chinese experts make it possible. Beginning in 2015, China helped Tanzania build its own great Internet firewall.

The Internet Iron Curtain

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new law calling on Russia to develop its own Internet. Under this setup, Russia should be able to completely disconnect itself from the World Wide Web—but have all websites within Russia continue to function. “The new law would provide for central control of all Internet traffic, and in essence, remove the need for data to be sent to and received from overseas servers,” explained Forbes. “This control would clearly introduce traffic monitoring and stark censorship of sites that could be visited by Russian users.”

The Russian government already blocks websites, though not quite on the same scale as China. What this new law is attempting, however, is even more ambitious. “No country has ever tried to build its own Internet architecture before,” wrote Time. “Even China, the world leader when it comes to Internet censorship, has built its ‘Great Firewall’ on the existing global dns [Domain Name System]—it filters traffic, but is still part of the same worldwide addressing system.”

Because it is so ambitious, Russia’s attempt may fail. But former Google ceo Eric Schmidt has warned that the Internet could split in two within 10 to 15 years. One version would be free and open and centered on America. Another would be heavily restricted and led by China.

Building a New Internet

Underlying these fears is the fact that China is literally building a new Internet.

The quest of Chinese firm Huawei to build 5G Internet across the world is the most visible manifestation of this.

5G (fifth generation) Internet infrastructure is a major upgrade that transmits information much more rapidly. A mobile phone on 5G is expected to have an average download speed of 1 GBps, faster than your current top-of-the-line home fiber optic connection.

It can also handle more connected devices. So it will become the backbone of the “Internet of things.” As cars, roads and even fridges all begin to talk to each other, they’ll be doing it largely through the 5G network.

“We think the stakes couldn’t be higher with regard to 5G technology, because of all of the things we build out over the coming years on top of that tech,” Rob Strayer, the deputy assistant secretary for cyber and international communications at the United States State Department, told bbc. “This is truly a monumental decision being made now.”

Huawei is the world’s largest telecom equipment manufacturer, and like all big Chinese companies, it is controlled by the Chinese government. The Central Intelligence Agency claims that Huawei receives money from China’s security services. Despite this, it will be building much of the 5G infrastructure. Europe is seriously considering using Huawei. Even the United Kingdom has decided to use Huawei, though it will jeopardize close relations with the U.S.

But this isn’t the only piece of Chinese control infrastructure. As part of its Belt and Road Initiative, China is building and upgrading networks all across Central Asia. A Pentagon report in January warned that this “Digital Silk Road” project could “enable politically motivated censorship.”

Huawei is also moving out to sea. Huawei Marine has worked on over 100 undersea cable projects, becoming the world’s fourth-largest undersea cable company. “While the U.S. wages a high-profile campaign to exclude China’s Huawei Technologies Co. from next-generation mobile networks over fears of espionage, the company is embedding itself into undersea cable networks that ferry nearly all of the world’s Internet data,” the Wall Street Journal reported in March. It warned that American officials “say the company’s knowledge of and access to undersea cables could allow China to attach devices that divert or monitor data traffic—or, in a conflict, to sever links to entire nations. Such interference could be done remotely ….”

Britain’s national security adviser, Mark Sedwill, warned in 2017 that attacks on these cables could have “the same effect as used to be achieved in, say, World War ii by bombing the London docks or taking out a power station.”

China, with all its experience spying on the Internet use of its 1.3 billion citizens, could soon spy on the world.

Great Cannon

In March 2015, China unveiled a new weapon—its “great cannon.” Its first target was foreign websites that helped Chinese Internet users get around its firewall. The cannon weaponized China’s 800 million Internet users. It took users of Baidu, China’s equivalent of Google, and directed them to the target websites. Before long, these sites were flooded with more traffic than they could handle, and knocked offline. In his book The Great Firewall of China, James Griffiths describes this as a crucial moment “when the architects of the Great Firewall turned their attention to the rest of the world, unwilling to tolerate challenges to their dominance wherever they came from.”

“It was a message,” writes Griffiths, “[a] new front in China’s war on the Internet.”

Already companies have to be very careful about what they do online. Last year, an employee running the Marriott International Twitter account “liked” a tweet from a Tibetan separatist group. It seemed a reasonable thing to do—the group had praised Marriott for listing Tibet as a separate country from China.

The Chinese government responded by blocking Marriot’s website and mobile app for a week. Marriot caved. They fired the employee and posted a groveling tweet.

With China controlling more and more of the Internet, will this offensive action continue? How long before large companies no longer host content that China disagrees with? The Trumpet is banned in China—could China start targeting websites like ours beyond its borders?

A Great Famine

The Internet has been a great help to the Trumpet. Like all news organizations, we face huge challenges. How do you stand out with an often unpopular message when there is so much other content competing for attention? But at least our message is available and easy to access for people who are interested.

This will not always be the case. The Bible warns that there will come a time when this message will not be so freely available.

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11).

The time will come when “the many hundreds of thousands of books and booklets we print and distribute each year will no longer be readily available,” explained Mark Saranga in our Christian-living magazine Royal Vision. “The millions of magazines we distribute every year won’t be sent out. The Key of David, as we know it today, will no longer be broadcast. The voice of God’s servant won’t be heard as it is today (Ezekiel 33:31-33).”

This prophecy goes hand in hand with some of our other major forecasts. Our January 2018 Trumpet issue was a special edition on “The New Strongman Age.” The Bible tells us we’re moving into a time of authoritarian rulers—who won’t allow free speech, online or off.

The rise of these strongmen is most visible in nations like Russia and China. And it is the same with Internet censorship. But the stage is set for it to expand. In our next Trumpet issue, editor in chief Gerald Flurry will have an article on Europe’s push toward Internet censorship—and how it exposes the nature of the power rising there. Another significant part of this trend is the rise of the radical left in the U.S. and their focus on suppressing what they disagree with.

The state of the Internet under the strongmen we see today shows us what the Internet will look like in this coming strongman age.

You won’t have free access to this message forever. So now’s the time to get to know us. If you’d like to know more about the Trumpet, what we do, and why we do it, check out our About Us section. It will tell you all about our work, as well as how you can get involved in spreading it while there is still time.

Has Russia Secretly Installed Nuclear Missiles in Venezuela?

Foreign powers are targeting America’s soft underbelly.

Thousands of Venezuelans clashed with pro-government forces on April 30 when opposition leader Juan Guaidó and a small cadre of military officers tried to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. This attempted coup, dubbed Operation Freedom, was supposed to trigger a split in the Venezuelan military, force Maduro into exile, and usher in Guaidó as an interim president until free and fair elections could be held. Instead, it prompted pro-Maduro security forces to crush all resistance. More than 60 people were injured and video footage shows an armored vehicle running over demonstrators.

At first, it seemed like Operation Freedom might succeed. United States President Donald Trump tweeted, “The United States stands with the people of Venezuela and their freedom.” U.S. national security adviser John Bolton announced that several key members of Maduro’s government had agreed to a peaceful transition of power to Guaidó. But when Maduro failed to flee the country, the coup failed. The whereabouts of Guaidó are currently unknown, but many other opposition leaders have already been arrested.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told cnn on April 30 that Maduro was actually preparing to surrender power and seek asylum in Cuba, but that the Russians had talked him out of it.

“He had an airplane on the tarmac,” Pompeo said. “He was ready to leave this morning, as we understand it, and the Russians indicated he should stay.”

Ties between Russia and the U.S. have worsened since Russia annexed part of Ukraine in 2014. Now it is making a play in America’s hemisphere by supporting an anti-American regime in Venezuela.

“We haven’t seen the Russians in the Western Hemisphere this strongly with the Cuban Missile Crisis, with military assets,” Rep. Michael McCaul told Fox News on Wednesday. “They love nothing more than to poke us in the eye.”

Russia has publicly admitted to sending military personnel and nuclear-capable strategic bombers to Venezuela. Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart has even suggested that Russia may have already installed nuclear missiles in Venezuela, like its attempt to install nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962. He did not offer proof of his claim, but Russia has the missiles and the political connections in Venezuela to make this frightening scenario a reality.

There have been no foreign nuclear weapons in the Western Hemisphere since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Both Russia and China are making economic and military inroads into the Caribbean Sea. “There is a new Cold War in the Caribbean,” reported guest contributor Scott B. MacDonald in Global Americans. “Venezuela is the current flashpoint, but Cuba, a country where China has emerged as a major investor and trade partner, is next, especially in the face of a reassertive U.S. seeking to protect its geostrategic underbelly.”

Even the European Union is starting to get involved in the great power jockeying in the Caribbean. While the EU has joined the U.S. in calling for free and fair elections in Venezuela, it has also threatened to sue the U.S. at the World Trade Organization over sanctions imposed on Cuba. Like Russia and China, the EU is more concerned about protecting its economic investments in Latin America than it is about toppling anti-American dictatorships. China, Europe and Russia are all backing Cuba against the U.S.

Astonishingly, Bible prophecy indicates that China, Europe and Russia will soon be backing many other Latin American nations against the United States. Some 2,700 years ago, God inspired the Prophet Isaiah to write about a vast trade bloc—“a mart of nations”—that would form in the end time (Isaiah 23:3).

Verse 1 shows that a lead nation in this trade bloc would be “Chittim.” Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry explains in his booklet Isaiah’s End-Time Vision that Chittim, or Kittim, is an ancient name for modern China. Another leading entity in the trade bloc is “Tyre.” Mr. Flurry explains that this represents “the commercial center” of modern Europe. A related passage in Ezekiel 27 mentions ancient names for modern Russia (Tubal and Meshech), showing that it too will join this “mart.”

China, Europe and Russia will team up to besiege the nations of end-time Israel (the United States and Britain, primarily). And since roughly half of U.S. seaborne-trade passes through the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, these three powers will need to dramatically increase their presence in the region. So it is tremendously significant that Russia is moving military equipment into Venezuela while the EU moves to thwart America’s embargo against Cuba. A time is coming when a collation of foreign powers will “conquer” the Caribbean and use it to economically besiege the United States.

For a more detailed explanation of why God is sending such terrible curses on America, read Mr. Flurry’s article “America Is Being Besieged Economically.”

German Army Trains Saudi Soldiers

German Army Trains Saudi Soldiers

A Saudi-German military alliance is forming against Iran and Israel.

Saudi soldiers will begin their officer training this July in Germany. Despite Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the Yemen War, Germany continues to strengthen its military alliance with the Arab kingdom. Saudi Arabia’s military leverage in the Middle East is growing considerably, thanks to German help. Germany is also greatly benefiting from the alliance—and in a way that few understand.

Over the next few years, Germany will train 14 officers for the Saudi military. Starting this July, five of them will start training with the German armed forces; two more will train with the German Air Force. Seven additional Saudi soldiers are currently taking language courses in Germany and will begin their officer training in 2020. After their training with the army, they will study for three to four years at Bundeswehr University.

It is common for the German Army to train soldiers from foreign countries. But its military cooperation with Saudi Arabia is worth taking note of. The officer training is only one of the latest steps that Germany has taken to fortify Saudi Arabia as a military stronghold against Iran.

Since 2015, the Saudi military has been fighting Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The war has led to the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world, according to the United Nations. So why is Germany interested in further strengthening Saudi troops?

After the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018, the German government temporarily halted its weapons exports to the Saudi kingdom until September. But the decision was only a gesture for the world stage. “A deal approved by Germany’s secretive National Security Council allows Germany to continue exporting armaments to Saudi Arabia,” we explained in our article “Germany’s Secretive Arms Exports.”

Not only are German armaments exports continuing to flow into Saudi Arabia, German manufacturers have been increasingly involved in building up the kingdom’s own industry.

Since 2018, Andreas Schwer has been running Saudi Arabia’s arms industry. The former board member in the armaments division of the Düsseldorf Rheinmetall Group is now the ceo of Saudi Arabian Military Industries (sami). This is one way Saudi Arabia is importing German expertise. German companies have also increased their support for Saudi Arabia’s industrial development, particularly in the field of digitalization.

The German-Saudi relationship is developing from a mere trade relationship into a strategic alliance.

Both the Saudi officer training and Germany’s help in building up Saudi Arabia’s military and defense industries can be traced back to a deal the two countries signed in 2017. Concerning the deal, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: “We cannot have German soldiers anywhere in the world, but we can very well pass on our know-how.”

A large-scale military alliance is forging between the two countries.

This increased military cooperation is not only of great geopolitical significance, but also of great prophetic relevance. In the Bible, Psalm 83 describes an alliance between Arab nations and Germany. Daniel 11:40 records that the alliance is targeted against Iran. Specific nations mentioned in the Psalm 83 prophecy include Assur (Germany), Edom and Amalek (Turkey), Ishmaelites (Saudi Arabia and neighboring Gulf nations), and Moab and Ammon (Jordan).

These nations will use their incredible military power to strike out at their common enemy, radical Islam led by Iran (Daniel 11:40). Germany is preparing Saudi Arabia’s military for this prophesied clash. Regarding this prophecy, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote in 2013:

The Iranians are so focused on conquering their own objectives that they don’t see what the Germans are doing. They don’t recognize how Germany is planning for the bigger war to come! No one but the Trumpet recognizes it! But the facts are visible for anyone to see.

Germany has expected to clash with Iran, and it has been working on a strategy for a decade or more. That strategy is almost complete. Germany has surrounded Iran.

Iran is Israel’s number one enemy. For this reason, the Jewish nation may temporarily rejoice over this military alliance. But the Psalm 83 prophecy clearly shows that the ultimate goal of this alliance will be to destroy Israel. Anti-Semitism is growing in both of these countries; we can expect this trend to continue.

The Trumpet has warned since 1992 about this coming clash with Iran. With the understanding of the Psalm 83 prophecy, we have expected German cooperation with Saudi Arabia to increase, despite reports of Saudi humanitarian violations and public German upset.

Our expectation has been realized. Over the years, we have seen more and more evidence that the prophesied clash is imminent.

To learn more about the prophecies behind this coming clash and where it will ultimately lead, read Mr. Flurry’s article “Germany’s Secret Strategy to Destroy Iran” and request his free booklet The King of the South.

Germany is pursuing an evil military plot that will entangle humanity into a far greater crisis than the one in Yemen—another world war. But the God who prophesied of this coming war also has a grand plan to save mankind from its evil. The above-mentioned literature will explain God’s plan for mankind in greater detail.

Why Can’t Israel Solve the Gaza Crisis?

Calibrating Israel’s true military might while taking cover in a shrapnel-ridden house

jerusalem
Six hundred ninety rockets or mortars were fired from the Gaza Strip in the last two days, marking the most serious uptick of violence in the past four years. Israel’s Iron Dome Aerial Defense System intercepted 240 of them. Most of the others were allowed to fall into open areas. The remaining dozens hit populated centers in the south, killing four civilians and wounding dozens more.

On Sunday, during the heaviest barrage, I visited Ashkelon, a city of 140,000 people and the scene of numerous penetrations through the Iron Dome. As part of a group of journalists organized by Media Central, we first visited the home of Moshe Agadi, who was killed by shrapnel from a rocket the previous night.

Arriving at the property we were told to be quiet out of respect for the grieving family inside the home, whose loved one was killed just 10 hours earlier. A 5-to-6-foot-diameter hole in the yard beside the house marked the impact zone of the rocket, which completely destroyed a concrete wall separating the house from the neighboring property. Agadi’s home, though spared from a direct hit, was scarred with shrapnel holes the size of grapefruits—shrapnel that penetrated the home and killed Moshe, a 58-year-old father of four.

After a press briefing by Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus and police spokesman Mickey Rosenfield, we were free to take pictures of the site. Every now and then, one of the family members would poke a head out the door to see if we were still there, obviously finding it hard to deal with the death of a loved one while their residence was crawling with journalists. I assume the family thought it was worth making their grief public if it meant that more in the world would realize the constant threat these Israelis are under.

It didn’t take long before we too got a taste of that threat.

Just as we were preparing to leave, the sirens began to blare over the city. I was standing on the other side of the road from the property at the time. Immediately, I heard the sound of a rocket roaring through the air.

I froze for a second to think of my options. Do I throw myself to the ground? Do I run for shelter? Just as I decided to run back to the house with the others, I saw the Iron Dome’s counter-rocket fly into the air. I didn’t look back to see if it hit. (Listen to the sound of the incoming rockets at 18:30 on the link below)

There we were—journalists, foreign and Israeli, a few idf soldiers, the idf spokesman and the grieving family—all squatting down together on the floor, listening to impacts and interceptions. It might sound cliché, but it felt like the thump of my heart was as loud as the pounding outside.

After the attack ended, we went outside. There was no sign of destruction, although to my unfamiliar ears it seemed like the strike was close.

It wasn’t but two minutes later and another burst of missiles headed toward Ashkelon. This time I looked up and three or four missiles were fired from the Iron Dome to intercept the rockets. Like strands of white ribbons, the Iron Dome’s missiles left perfectly separated vapor trails in the sky before they scattered to hunt their targets.

Again, we were inside, huddled with the Agadi family. Again, shaking our heads in disbelief. We were taking cover in a home where someone had died the previous night from the same type of rocket fire. Thankfully this time, lightning did not strike the same place twice.

Instead of continuing on to our planned meeting with municipality officials, we headed to a nearby concrete factory, just two kilometers away, where one of the rockets had landed.

Arriving at the scene, we saw that an ambulance, a firetruck and police were already dealing with the situation. Standing by the ambulance was a medic I had earlier seen hastily climb into an ambulance while I ran for cover in the Agadi residence. Turns out, he had been heading to the site of the second attack.

Two of the workers were seriously injured by the attack, and at least one of them later died from his wounds. A worker at the factory told Haaretz that he had tried to get one of the workers who was killed to the shelter, but he had chosen to stay outside. “I told him, ‘Come with me, run to the shelter,’ and he said, ‘No, not necessary.’” Considering these attacks happen so frequently, and largely without incident, I can understand the carelessness.

Leaving Ashkelon we boarded the bus once more to visit the small community of Nahal Oz, where a rocket had landed the night before. However, shortly after leaving the factory, the sirens sounded again for an incoming rocket. This time, the driver pulled onto the shoulder, and the 15 or so journalists piled off the bus as quickly as possible. Being last off the bus, I knew my chance of getting down in time was slim. Thankfully this time, the rocket or mortar didn’t come close.

We boarded the bus, but didn’t make it to Nahal Oz. Our trip was called off after a car was hit while traveling down the road we were about to take. It was hit, not by a rocket, but an anti-tank Kornet missile, fired over two miles away from the Gaza Strip. The one man traveling in the car later died from his wounds in hospital. His death brought the total Israeli deaths for the day to four—four more citizens than have died in almost five years on the Gaza border from a rocket.

I’m still processing the events from Sunday, but here are a few takeaways from my visit.

‘Land for Peace’ Does Not Work

When Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip in 2005, it did so hoping that some sort of peace between Israel and the Palestinians could be accomplished. This did not happen. The Iranian-backed Hamas Palestinian group took control of the territory and embarked upon a decade-long war against Israel, using the territory and funds to launch rockets at civilians, dig tunnels to infiltrate Israel, and kidnap soldiers for future bargaining chips with the State of Israel.

Since that time, there have been three wars, the latest taking place in the summer of 2014. And since then, there have been numerous dangerous flare-ups on the border, similar to this weekend’s. Generally, it is Israel’s concessions that restrain further actions. It’s impossible to have peace with Iranian-backed terrorist groups that are sworn to Israel’s destruction.

The Weakness of Israel’s Gaza Policy

While many outside Israel will laud the current ceasefire as a wonderful achievement, most in Israel don’t—certainly not the 200,000 civilians within range of Hamas’s shorter-range weaponry. After 12 years of failed policy, we know that “mowing the grass” every few years in a war with Hamas is not a sustainable solution. There is an entire generation of Israeli children who know no other life than bomb shelters, code red sirens, and post-traumatic stress.

The rockets are becoming more effective, and Hamas is becoming smarter in how to use them. On Sunday, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (pij) employed a mass barrage technique to try and overwhelm the Iron Dome system. And even though the Iron Dome had 86 percent efficiency, many still got through. They are now putting heavier warheads on the rockets, filling them with more life-shredding shrapnel, such as was evident at the Ashkelon residence.

The Iron Dome may be a savior in many respects, but it also prevents Israel from seriously dealing with the problem. Without the Iron Dome, 240 projectiles would have likely hit civilian areas. If that had happened, Israel would be entering full-scale war, which, looking at this humanly, is what it would take to stop the incessant fire.

Iran Is Pushing the Region Toward War

The international media often fail to recognize that this is not a fight between Israel and the Palestinians. Rather, Gaza is just one battlefront in Iran’s war on Israel. As idf spokesman Conricus told us on Sunday, “Iran’s fingerprints are over everything” in Gaza. “There is almost total reliance of the pij on Iranian funding and weapons. Almost all of the mortar’s rockets or weapons fired by the pij were either manufactured in Iran or purchased with Iranian money,” he said.

While these Palestinian factions may sit at a negotiating table to gain concessions from Israel (as was happening when this round of fighting started), it is Iran that tells them when to pull the trigger.

Dominating Hamas and the pij inside the Gaza Strip gives Iran another front from which to threaten Israel. And while most in the media will not portray it as such, the current Hamas-led violence on the Gaza border should be seen as another Iranian battlefront against the Jewish state.

Iran has a potent and passionate desire to eradicate the Jewish state and take control of Jerusalem. Iran continuously meddles in Palestinian affairs to further its own goals. Iran’s ideological, logistical and monetary support of Palestinian terrorists is about nothing less than conquering Jerusalem. For this reason, there can be no peaceful resolution with the Palestinians while they are funded and directed by Iran.

Two decades ago, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry berated the West for being “spellbound by peace treaties” and thus suffering willful blindness to “Iran’s massive plot to control the Middle East.” Then he wrote, “The most precious jewel of Iran’s plan is to conquer Jerusalem. This would then galvanize the Islamic world behind Iran!” (The King of the South). This latest Gaza flare-up is more proof that Iran has not given up its goal.

No Human Solution to Gaza

Israel is undoubtedly the strongest military power in the Middle East. However, I found that hard to reconcile while I was squatting down next to the idf spokesman for fear of incoming rockets. How much is Israel’s military dominance worth if its people are so often holed up in bunkers or safe rooms in their own houses?

Many Israelis understand the weakness of the current strategy and want to do something about it. Some politicians are now calling for Israel to retake full control of the Gaza Strip. However, Gaza has a population of about 2 million Palestinians, so retaking it would be the easy part—ruling it would be difficult.

As we have often said, there is no human solution to the Gaza crisis.

Mr. Flurry has often noted, as did some of Israel’s own founders, that the modern State of Israel was born and sustained by miracles from God. The victories in 1948 and 1967 are a testament to God’s desire to see the nation of Israel reborn in the land of their forefathers.

In those early days, Israel was weak militarily, yet that was when its greatest victories took place. In terms of military power, those were wars Israel should not have won.

Now that Israel is strong, where are the miraculous victories?

Or even any purely man-made victories for that matter?

There is a cause for 12 years of failed policy in Gaza, as well as the ineffectual Lebanon wars. In many cases, Israel retains a sense of will that is so lacking in other nations in the West. The few times I’ve visited the Gaza border I’ve seen individuals with a refreshing fire in their belly, who were willing to do anything for their country.

Nevertheless, even with its unprecedented strength, Israel is unable to solve its problems.

There is a cause.

If you would like to know the reason for Israel’s failing policy in Gaza, and why it can’t defeat its weaker enemies, I suggest that you read Jerusalem in Prophecy, by Mr. Flurry. Along with exposing the reason for Israel’s military weakness, this booklet also details the times when Israel received miraculous victories from God. More than that, it also forecasts a time when Israel will once again receive the divine help from God that it needs.
