Mohamed Morsi Sentenced to Death
An Egyptian court on Tuesday confirmed a death sentence handed to ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
The verdict relates to his part in a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that eventually brought him to power. Twenty-one imprisoned defendants were sentenced to 25 years in prison. Five leading members of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced to death along with another 93 defendants who were tried in absentia.
Morsi was forced out of office in July 2013 by the military amid mass protests demanding his resignation. He has since been detained, and his Muslim Brotherhood has been labeled a terrorist organization.
