U.S. Removes Cuba From Its List of State Sponsors of Terrorism
Cuba is no longer an official state sponsor of terrorism. The Obama administration formally removed the Caribbean nation from its list of state sponsors of terrorism on May 29—45 days after the administration informed Congress of its intent to do so.
Congress had the option to oppose that decision within the 45-day notice period, but it didn’t. Congress however, opposed President Obama’s request to lift an economic embargo on Cuba.
It’s expected that in the coming weeks, the former Cold War enemies will seek to reestablish diplomatic ties and normalize relations, despite the nations’ radically different worldviews and political systems.
