U.S. Willing to Change Pro-Democracy Programs in Cuba

The United States is willing to change pro-democracy programs in Cuba in order to restore diplomatic ties between the two countries, a senior state department official said on Tuesday.

Programs such as courses in journalism and information technology are given by the U.S. mission in Havana.

Cuban President Raúl Castro described them as “illegal” training for government opponents. The U.S. agreed to alter the programs in order to remove one of the major obstacles to the reopening of embassies.

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba have been severed since 1961, during the Cold War. The willingness of the U.S. to adapt pro-democracy programs shows how much the current administration will compromise to reach a deal with Cuba.
