Europe: The Next Chapter

Insight into the next stage of Europe’s emergence as a German-led superstate.

It is the most important story of 2010.

The financial crisis in Europe has driven every nation on the Continent to its knees before Germany, and Berlin has exploited the crisis to tangibly and forcefully reshape the European Union.

It’s also a scenario that was described by Herbert Armstrong—more than 50 years ago. “Germany is the economic and military heart of Europe,” he wrote in 1953. “Without Germany such a federation of nations is impossible. Yet the other nations of Europe will not trust Germany or a German leader. Still, in spite of this, it is probable that none but a German can provide the dynamic, inspired leadership required to organize such a political military federation” (Good News, May 1953). For decades, Mr. Armstrong warned tirelessly that Germany would be revived and that it would successfully create a European superstate!

As we enter 2011, a year in which Germany will continue to exploit the financial crisis to further its own ambitions, it is important to consider: What is the next chapter in the emergence of this German-designed United States of Europe?

Once again, we turn to the Bible-based, profoundly accurate forecasting of Herbert Armstrong for the answer.

In August 1978, Mr. Armstrong wrote: “Europeans want their own united military power! … They have made a real effort toward union in the Common Market. … But they well know there is but one possibility of union in Europe—and that is through the Vatican” (Good News, emphasis his).

Two years later, he warned that “world conditions may force European nations … to unite, bringing to pass the revived ‘Holy Roman Empire’ …. [European nations] have wanted to unite politically, with a common currency and common military force, for some time—but have been unable. It can be accomplished only through the Vatican” (Worldwide News, June 1980).

In 1979, Mr. Armstrong described a scenario that is remarkably relevant in 2010. “The nations of Europe have been striving to become reunited. They desire a common currency, a single combined military force, a single united government. They have made a start in the Common Market. They are now working toward a common currency. Yet, on a purely political basis, they have been totally UNABLE to unite” (Plain Truth, January 1979). In spite of these conflicting political interests, Mr. Armstrong explained, European countries will find a way to unite. How?

In only one way can this resurrected Holy Roman Empire be brought to fruition—by the ‘good offices’ of the Vatican, uniting church and state once again, with the Vatican astride and ruling.”

This is the next chapter in Europe’s emergence as a German-led superstate: The axis between the Vatican and Europe, particularly Germany, will become much stronger and extremely powerful!

Soon—perhaps this coming year—expect the Vatican to take center stage in Europe, and for a church-state relationship to materialize!

Of course, many smart geopolitical analysts will think this forecast preposterous. In our post-Reformation, “intellectually enlightened” world, the Vatican is rarely considered a force in geopolitics. Catholicism is widely thought of as little more than an innocuous religion, the Vatican an archaic institution fighting to secure its place in a world in which secularism and Islam have it on the ropes. To too many people, the Vatican is considered a spent force, a relic of the Middle Ages—an institution with minimal influence on world affairs.

In the months and years ahead, this perception will change dramatically!

In fact, the Vatican is already making a resurgence as a force in international relations. On December 10, the Guardianreported on cables from U.S. officials, disclosed by WikiLeaks, that reveal the Vatican working behind the scenes to shape events in Europe. In one cable, Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict xvi, is reported to have been secretly encouraging European leaders to oppose Turkey’s entrance into the European Union. Other documents reveal Catholic officials working to influence global debates on issues such as global warming and human cloning.

Apparently, the Guardian found the cables somewhat eye-opening. “Roman Catholicism is the only religion in the world with the status of a sovereign state, allowing the pope’s most senior clerics to sit at the top table with world leaders,” it reported. “The [WikiLeaks] cables reveal the Vatican routinely wielding influence through diplomatic channels while sometimes denying that it is doing so” (emphasis mine).

If you’ve read a smidgen of European history, this revelation isn’t the least bit surprising!

The Catholic Church has been the most significant and defining force in Europe for more than 1,500 years. From the time that Emperor Constantine institutionalized Catholicism as the state religion of the Roman Empire at the Council of Nicea in a.d. 325, Catholic officials and the Vatican have maintained ties with virtually all the major monarchies and governments in Europe.

The Vatican was behind Emperor Justinian in the sixth century when he purged Germanic tribes from Rome, reuniting the western Roman Empire with the east. In the eighth century, the pope provided moral and spiritual cover to Charlemagne as his armies swept across Europe, converting via the sword an entire continent to Catholicism. Similar church-state relationships existed under Otto the Great and the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburgs in the 16th century, Napoleon in the early 19th, and Nazi Germany in the 20th.

Fifteen hundred years of European history testify to this reality: When seismic events occur in Europe, the Vatican always plays a central role!

Many now recognize that Europe is currently experiencing a political, economic and military shift of tremendous proportions. In the time ahead, as Germany continues to reshape the Continent, Europe will enter the next chapter of its emergence as a global superstate. Expect the Vatican to reclaim its historic and prophetic role as the most powerful force in Europe—this time sitting astride the now-imminent United States of Europe!

Assange Extradition Shows EU Power Over British Law

Assange Extradition Shows EU Power Over British Law

The extradition of an Australian citizen from Britain to Europe shows the power of European Union law.

The Swedish case against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is a clear example of the loss of the once-globally admired system of British justice caused by the implementation of the European Arrest Warrant (eaw).

Whether or not Mr. Assange is guilty of the accusations brought against him in Sweden, this case clearly demonstrates that, under the eaw, the British courts have no right to take into account the evidence against an accused Briton or foreign guest in Britain. It is a clear case of the once-sovereign British law being trumped by EU imperial law.

In fact, under the all-powerful eaw, EU law even trumps the sovereign law of any nation to which a foreign national is subject in his own country, if that foreign national is charged under EU law while resident in Britain.

Speaking to a crowd of journalists from around the world, Member of the European Parliament Gerard Batten said: “[Under the eaw] extradition has now become ‘judicial surrender’ and extradition reduced to a mere bureaucratic formality. British courts have been emasculated of their ability to protect the rights of accused persons from unjust arrest and imprisonment in relation to the eaw and their extradition to any EU member state.”

Mr. Batten further said that what is particularly sad is that Britain, the very home of the defense of freedom and the right of speech, is simply not allowed to hear prima facie evidence in an allegation before granting extradition to another EU member state.

He continued: “The ancient rights of the English (and our guests) to be protected by the courts has been removed because of the headlong flight to create a common European system of criminal law. Unfortunately for Mr. Assange his case will shine a light on the diabolical injustices being done to British citizens by the European Arrest Warrant.”

Around three people each day are now extradited from Britain to one of the 26 other EU countries. Most cases are for very trivial civil matters—certainly not for terrorist-related offenses, which was the argument on which the eaw was sold by EU elites to voters during the prevailing anti-terrorist mood just one week after 9/11.

Michael Howie wrote in the Telegraph on December 18 that “judges are sending people abroad with ‘no questions asked’ at the behest of foreign countries, often over allegations of petty crimes or offenses committed many years ago, and with little regard to potentially serious human rights abuses. … Last year Britain received more than 4,000 extradition requests from other EU states. … Meanwhile, the UK, which unlike some countries does not seek extradition for minor offenses, made only 220 requests to other European countries.”

And the “justice deficit” in the EU is only going to get much worse. In January 2011, the European Evidence Warrant will come into effect. It requires all EU states to give automatic recognition to search warrants issued by other member states and gives EU member countries the right to demand surveillance on a UK resident who has returned home, and access to his or her bank records.

This whole process has echoes of darker days that prevailed in Europe under a similarly inquisitorial system some 70 years ago.

Read our booklet Germany and the Holy Roman Empire for insight into the real source of the eaw and where it is heading in relation to its impact on the future of Britain, Europe and the rest of the world.

The Truth About Christmas

An eye-opening look at the origins of this popular holiday.

Democracy and the Palace of Europe

Democracy and the Palace of Europe

Ron Fraser for the Trumpet

The Palace of Europe is a hugely symbolic representation of an ancient ever resurrecting old imperial entity.

Strasbourg, France—It seems incongruous. Why would the lead institution of a “democratic” federation of nations intent on doing away with the nation-state need a palace? Is not such a building symbolic of a kingdom or an empire? Yet the Council of Europe, comprising a collective of 47 “democratic” nation-states, is ensconced in a building called “The Palace of Europe.” Well, there is an interesting story attached to just what that “palace” symbolizes.

Founded on May 5, 1949, by the Treaty of London, the initial Council comprised the constitutional monarchies of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, the republics of France, Ireland and Italy and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Within the complex web of institutions that comprise the project of uniting Europe, in the words of Jean-Claude Juncker, prime minister of Luxembourg and president of the EU’s Eurogroup, “the Council of Europe and the European Union are partners—different but complementary organizations.” Any nation that aspires to European membership must first become a member of the Council of Europe, though the EU itself is not a member per se of the Council—if you can figure that out. In a report on relations between the Council of Europe and the EU, Juncker recommended that the EU accede to Council membership. To this the EU has yet to agree.

The European project is by its nature a complex and confusing entity, born of machinery that deliberately and regularly produces treaties and subsequent regulations couched in language barely understandable to the average intelligent human being. So much of the murk behind which European elites hide their true intentions is masked by a facade of “democracy,” which effectively hides its very undemocratic nature. Thus it is no surprise to see at the entrance to the Palace of Europe, home of the Council of Europe, in huge block letters the caption, “Home of Democracy.”

No greater lie was ever told.

As the best of analysts have constantly observed, the European Union is the very antithesis of democracy. Governments of its member nations have either deliberately denied their constituents referenda on key decisions (witness Britain) or, as in the case of Ireland, have not accepted the outcome of referenda as legitimate. The EU has then propagandized the people with a blitz of deceit designed to change their minds to vote against their true feelings and for the EU’s unbending undemocratic designs. Major decisions resulting in the diminution of national sovereignty are taken by EU mandarins without any thought of reference to the people the EU hierarchy supposedly represents.

Standing in the front of this Palace of Europe on an intensely snowy day in Strasbourg, one cannot but feel that the chill wind of deceit that has blown constantly across the whole European Union project from its very beginnings is rapidly reaching a point where the blindness to its true undemocratic nature is so close to achieving its aim: the aim of dragging the masses, against their will, into the maw of a grand tyranny. A tyranny of a nature that has an all-too-familiar “Holy Roman” ring to it. For the true story behind the Palace of Europe is that it is not symbolic of the “home of democracy” at all. It is, rather, a grand mask behind which the project to resurrect the seventh and final formulation of that old and very bloody imperialist regime, the Holy Roman Empire, currently hides.

But the mask is increasingly dropping, revealing the real nature of this political beast. As the current euro crisis continues to develop, affecting not just the 27 member nations of the EU but the entirety of the 47 member nations of the Council of Europe, the true intentions of its elites are emerging.

From 1950, the Council of Europe’s action became reality with the adoption of an international treaty of an unprecedented importance, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, called ‘European Convention on Human Rights.’ This convention defines the rights and freedoms that all signatories’ states promise to guarantee to individuals under their jurisdiction, from the right to life and freedom of expression, to the prohibition of torture and discrimination.”

Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, yes, till one discovers the true intent behind new EU legislation. It is actually designed to actively deny the individual such “rights and freedoms.” It does so by the imposition of draconian measures to extradite and incarcerate civilians of not only EU member nations, but even foreign nationals hailing from non-EU member countries, in EU jails without recourse to legal representation and hold them at the EU’s pleasure. Such is the power of the newly enacted European Arrest Warrant.

This is “Holy Roman” jurisprudence in action at its very worst. In fact, it entrenches the horror of Roman inquisitorial law—which holds an individual as “guilty till proven innocent”—over and above the tradition of English law, being founded on the binding principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”

Far from the Palace of Europe being the “home of democracy,” it is an infamous monument to the very worst of “Holy Roman” imperial practices—the evil of the “holy” inquisition. Never was there such an edict contemplated by this most undemocratic of imperialist institutions, the European Union, that so exposed it as a literal resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire than this latest move by its Teutonic Roman Catholic elites.

Home of democracy, my foot!

Palace of tyranny would be more apt!

Depression Growing in American Colleges

Depression Growing in American Colleges

American education is literally hopeless.

Psychological counselors at colleges across America are getting busier as more students grapple with more serious mental health problems according to an article published in the New York Times on December 19 and a study released by the Center for the Study of Collegiate Mental Health (cscmh).

“It is widely believed that the prevalence and severity of college student mental health concerns has been on the rise since the establishment of college and university counseling centers in the 1940s,” wrote the cscmh. “This increase has been particularly noteworthy in the last 10-20 years, and there is active debate about a range of potential reasons for this increase.”

The American College Health Association also recently published a report that found that 46 percent of college students said they felt “things were hopeless” within the past 12 months. Fifty-eight percent felt lonely in the same time period and 31 percent “felt so depressed that it was difficult to function.”

“It’s so different from how people might stereotype the concept of college counseling, or back in the ’70s students coming in with existential crises: Who am I?” director of counseling at Stony Brook University in New York, Dr. Jenny Hwang, told the New York Times. “Now they’re bringing in life stories involving extensive trauma, a history of serious mental illness, eating disorders, self-injury, alcohol and other drug use.”

The Times reports that nearly half of those who visit student counseling centers are suffering from a serious mental illness—double the rate of 10 years ago.

Why are campus counseling staff being overwhelmed with depressed students?

Doubtless, the factors the Times identifies play a role. New pills have enabled doctors to get youths to college who, in previously years, would have not been able to cope. Doctors today have a broader definition of exactly what is a mental disease, and what needs treatment.

But none of these explanations get to the fundamental cause of why so many young people are depressed.

These shocking statistics show that something basic and vital is missing from today’s modern education.

That missing fundamental ingredient is hope. In an article titled “Education Filled With Hope,” Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote that this world’s education “leaves young people without hope.” He quoted 1 Corinthians 15:19: “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”

“This verse reveals the fundamental flaw in education today,” he wrote. “Whether it is religious or secular education, young people are only taught a hope that causes misery. Educators are giving our youth hope only in this life, and our young people are miserable!”

How obvious that is, when nearly half said they “felt things were hopeless” and nearly a third felt horribly depressed.

Man’s education brings hopelessness. But there is an alternative. For more information on how to become educated and grow in hope, read our free booklet Education With Vision.

The EU Wants Switzerland

Switzerland must submit to European Union law or face being cut off from EU markets, a report by EU foreign ministers published on December 14 says.

Switzerland’s current relationship with the EU has “clearly reached its limits” and has to change, the report says. Switzerland cooperates with the EU on a case by case basis, resulting in a series of over 120 agreements that give Switzerland similar access to the European Union as an EU member.

Its cooperation with Europe goes beyond the economy. EurActiv.com reports that “The ‘Bilateral i’ and ‘Bilateral ii’ agreements effectively mean that Switzerland enjoys the benefits of EU member states and [European Economic Area] countries on free movement of people, goods, services and capital—but without having lost any sovereignty or decision-making power.”

It remains a geostrategic absurdity that we have this white spot on the European map.
Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker
Switzerland is even a member of the EU’s Schengen scheme—an open borders agreement that allows easy travel between states.

But the EU wants more.

The foreign ministers’ report states that current agreements are “incoherent,” “unwieldy” and “inconsistent.”

The ministers, says the report, have “come to the conclusion that while the present system of bilateral agreements has worked well in the past, the challenge of the coming years will be to go beyond this complex system, which is creating legal uncertainty and has become unwieldy to manage and has clearly reached its limits.”

Switzerland, it says, now needs “efficient arrangements” so that it adopts and enforces EU law—including case law decided by the European Court of Justice.

The EU wants Switzerland to change its tax system, as it says it gives firms an unfair incentive to locate in Switzerland rather than another EU nation. It also wants more Swiss help in combating tax evasion.

“It is not surprising that the EU Council have raised the stakes,” political scientist Dieter Freiburghaus was quoted by swissinfo.ch as saying. “Voices have been loud for some time. This summer, then Economics Minister Doris Leuthard was confronted quite harshly with the demands from Brussels” (December 14).

Chairman of the Eurogroup (eurozone finance ministers) Jean-Claude Juncker said that Switzerland should join the EU in an interview with Die Zeit on December 15.

Switzerland held a referendum on joining the EU in March 2001. Seventy-seven percent of voters rejected joining.

Europe’s stance on Switzerland demonstrates how expansionist and aggressive the EU can be. It wants to ignore the wishes of Swiss voters to cajole the nation into coming under the EU. Of course, it is not so keen to adopt poorer eastern European nations—but Switzerland has a higher gdp per capita than any EU nation other than Luxembourg.

Swissinfo.ch states that according to Freiburghaus, and another political scientist, René Schwok, “Bern should have no real fears. The EU is in no hurry because it has many internal problems to solve” (ibid.).

They may be right, for now. But once the EU has fixed its economy and gotten its house in order, it will be looking for more states to dominate. As the Trumpetwrote in 2001:

The EU’s masterful step-by-step strategy of extracting economic, political and military cooperation from its subjects has worked on Switzerland. If the Swiss think they can play neutrality games with the EU, they are gravely mistaken. They escaped two world wars, but they shall not escape the third.

As that article states, “In the coming final European conflict, prophecy indicates, sadly, that the Swiss will suffer much more than just the breath of Nazidom at its borders.”

Switzerland has worked with the EU to the point that it is now dependent upon it. It can and will be absorbed. For more information on Switzerland’s future, see our article “Why Switzerland Will Not Remain Neutral.”
