The election victory of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt left people around the world alarmed. Many fear that the AfD will revive Germany’s dark past. These fears are not unfounded, as Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry explains in “Nazism Rises Again in Germany.” But we can also be certain that many of the AfD’s policies will not come to pass because they are contrary to Bible prophecy.

No to a United States of Europe

The AfD’s party program for the European elections in 2024 stated:

We reject [a European Union] that seeks to transform itself into a state with legislative authority and its own government, as well as the idea of the “United States of Europe.” Only in nation-states with democratic constitutions can popular sovereignty and the fundamental rights of citizens be exercised and preserved.

The Bible reveals that a “United States of Europe” with its “own government” will come. The late Herbert W. Armstrong proclaimed these prophecies for decades. In a July 24, 1983, co-worker letter, he wrote:

The very first issue of the Plain Truth magazine appeared February, 1934—just 50 years ago lacking about six months. The article starting on the cover page warned of a coming sudden appearance of a resurrected “Holy Roman Empire” in Europe—a union of 10 nations in Europe under one government, with one united military force. For 50 years I have been crying out to the world the Bible prophecies of this coming “United States of Europe”—a new united superpower perhaps more powerful than either the Soviet Union or the United States!

The prophecy that “10 nations in Europe” will unite “under one government” comes right out of Revelation 17. “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast” (verses 12-13).

There will be 10 European nations or groups of nations that will give up parts of their sovereignty to this overarching dictator. The AfD’s appeal to national sovereignty is contrary to this prophesied direction.

Numerous prophecies also show that these nations will go to war together. Daniel 11:40 refers to this power bloc as “the king of the north” waging war against “the king of the south,” radical Islam led by Iran. But the AfD rejects a joint European army. Its party program reads:

The AfD opposes a European army and remains committed to a fully capable Bundeswehr as the cornerstone of German sovereignty. With its own strong armed forces, Germany will be in a position to replace U.S. forces on German soil in the medium term.

The AfD also rejects a common European currency and demands the abolishment of the Euro and the reintroduction of national currencies. It’s not the first far-right party to do so. Back in 1998, Trumpet editor Gerald Flurry said about another far-right party:

Gerhard Frey’s pro-Nazi party is against the new European Union currency—the euro. He doesn’t want Germany to give up their famous Deutschemark. But he is going to lose that battle.

How do I know? Because the Bible reveals that 10 nations are going to unite politically and economically in Europe and destroy mightily. And who is the real power behind these nations? God, in Isaiah 10:5, only mentions the Germans as the real power. Germany will use the European Union to conceal their nationalistic ambitions and give them a certain dignity.

Frey did lose that battle, and we can predict that the AfD will as well. Europe will not return to national currencies.

The AfD also warns against the abolishment of cash, writing:

Cash means freedom and protection against expropriation and total surveillance.

Our cash is in danger. With the support of the German federal government, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank, its gradual abolition is being pushed forward.

Prophecy indicates that the European superstate will introduce “total surveillance” and even gain the power to prevent people from engaging in business (Revelation 13:16-17).

While the EU will change dramatically, the AfD’s stated vision will not be the outcome. However, many other AfD sentiments will find a home in the prophesied European superstate, such as national pride for Germany’s history, a revival of German culture and its hatred for American global rule.

Relations With Russia

The AfD’s stance toward Russia is more complicated. Its Bundestag election program 2025 states:

Restoring unhindered trade with Russia includes the immediate lifting of economic sanctions against Russia and the restoration of the Nord Stream pipelines.

The Bible does prophesy that Germany and Russia will make a trade alliance to bring down the U.S. economically (Isaiah 23; Ezekiel 5 and 27). In Isaiah’s End-Time Vision, Mr. Flurry writes:

When the Holy Roman Empire attacks North America, there will be no help or sympathy from Asia. In fact, considering that China has come to possess most of the world’s strategic sea gates (which, ironically, at one time were held by Britain and America), we believe there may be a brief alliance between the German-led Holy Roman Empire and certain Asian powers (Russia, China, Japan—the kings of the east). Should Europe, the resurrected Holy Roman Empire, find a way to take advantage—even for a moment—of key resources and strategic holdings of China, Russia and Japan, it would have more than enough power to besiege the Anglo-Saxon nations and enslave them.

However, there is something the AfD doesn’t understand about this alliance. Germany and Russia will only be temporary allies before they clash. Furthermore, Daniel 11:44 prophesies that fear of Russia will motivate Germany’s military rise and conquests.

However, some in the AfD do not fear Russia’s military strength but appear to admire it.

During an interview in August, a Bild journalist noticed a black mug with a red star and the phrase “Army of Russia” in Cyrillic letters inside the constituency office of Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, AfD deputy chairman in Saxony-Anhalt. This indicates an admiration for the Russian army that you would not expect among rivals.

The AfD’s admiration and praise for Russia goes contrary to the current German strategy of stoking fear to fuel Germany’s militarization.

For example, on September 1, the German government formally blamed Russia for the failed bombing at the Leipzig airport on August 4. The government used the incident to fast-track drone defense measures and to further militarize Germany.

But AfD claims that the evidence of Russia being behind the attack was fabricated. It rejects the government’s fearmongering strategy and portrays Russia as a reasonable partner that poses no threat to Germany.

Yet Germany’s fear of Russia will hasten its militarization and unification, as Mr. Flurry explained in “The Crimean Crisis Is Reshaping Europe!”:

A second major prophecy that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will bring about is the arrival of a strongman in Europe. A new leader is coming—a kind of Vladimir Putin. This is what Europe needs in order to bind together, to have the strength and unity of purpose needed to confront Russia.

Daniel 8:23 tells us that “in the latter time,” we should expect “a king of fierce countenance” to arise in Europe. “And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people” (verse 24).

Europe’s new fear of Russia is going to play a major role in hastening the fulfillment of that prophecy!

A party that downplays the Russian threat is unlikely to win power over Germany. However, some of its pro-Russian and anti-American sentiments will shape the nation’s policies.
