EU Train May Leave without UK

Britain’s continued skepticism of a strongly integrated Europe is steering the nation toward a confrontation with other European nations.

After having refused to adopt the European Union’s currency and constitution, the United Kingdom is now threatening to block attempts to revive the constitution as is. For those who want to see an EU constitution ratified and a strong federal EU established, the UK’s efforts to slow down the EU train is unacceptable.

“Should the British government block the new attempt for agreement on the constitutional treaty, then the European Union must progress without Great Britain,” Belgium Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt said in an interview with Die Welt.

The rejection of the constitution by France and the Netherlands (via referendums) in 2005 caused somewhat of a political crisis in the EU. All member nations must accept it for it to come into effect. The UK did not hold its planned referendum after the French and Dutch rejections.

Since then the EU has considered integrating using a two-speed system. Those that have accepted the constitution and wish to integrate further would move forward, while the rest of the members would catch up later.

Verhofstadt admitted the two-speed system would not be ideal but that, still, those nations on board for further integration should proceed with “more cooperation in economic, social and justice policy within the euro-zone.”

The Trumpet has long predicted that whether the UK is kicked out or opts out on its own, it will not be a part of a united Europe. Already, as it drags its feet, other EU nations appear to be more than willing to leave it behind.
