Taiwan Hit by Strongest Earthquake in 25 Years

At least nine people were killed and more than 1,000 injured by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that shook Taiwan Wednesday morning.

At the time of writing, 75 people stuck in tunnels in Hualien County have been rescued by emergency workers, while 137 remain trapped. Thousands of homes are without power, buildings have collapsed, and a major highway is closed because of landslides and rockfalls, Taiwanese officials said.

The earthquake is the worst that has hit the island since 1999, when a 7.7-magnitude quake killed 2,400. Powerful aftershocks with a magnitude up to 7 are expected to occur until the end of the week, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration warned.
