Senate Passes Respect for Marriage Act
The Respect for Marriage Act passed the United States Senate 61 to 36 yesterday. Forty-nine Democrats and 12 Republicans voted for it. The legislation still needs to pass the House of Representatives. Proponents hope to have the Democrat-controlled House vote on it before it is replaced with the coming Republican-led legislature in January.
Redefining family: The Respect for Marriage Act repeals the unenforced Defense of Marriage Act, which recognized marriage as a union of one man and one woman. It requires the federal government and all 50 states to recognize homosexual “marriages” lawfully performed in any state. The Biden administration wants Congress to pass it in case the Supreme Court overturns its 2015 decision that unconstitutionally mandated legal recognition of same-sex “marriage” nationwide.
Attack on religious liberty: The bill allows individuals to privately sue organizations with traditional marriage beliefs. The Respect for Marriage Act could allow for lawsuits against wedding organizers, adoption agencies and other institutions that refuse service supporting homosexual “marriage” for faith-based reasons. Several Republican senators attempted to introduce amendments to stop this. All the attempts failed.
Republican betrayal: The act only passed because of the help of 12 Republican senators. But a great many people oppose it:
- A November 22 Heritage Foundation poll suggests 70 percent of Republican voters and 73 percent of professed conservatives from Indiana, Iowa, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming oppose the bill.
Eroding foundations: Herbert W. Armstrong wrote, “A solid family structure is the very foundation of any stable and permanent society.” This is why Communists and other radicals seek to destroy it. If you undermine the family as the basic economic unit of society, you create a culture where people depend on the state. Many Republicans say they support same-sex “marriage” because they support freedom, but the left is using it as a weapon to destroy free societies.
