Johnson Claims Germany Wanted Ukraine to Capitulate

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told cnn at a November 21 event in Lisbon that Germany wanted Ukraine to fold to Russia rather than having a long war on the Continent. Germany furiously dismissed the charges.

The Germans, for all sorts of sound economic reasons, really didn’t want it to. … I’ll tell you a terrible thing—the German view was at one stage that if it were going to happen, which would be a disaster, then it would be better for the whole thing to be over quickly and for Ukraine to fold. I couldn’t support that. I thought that was a disastrous way of looking at it, but I could understand why they thought and felt as they did.

Germany quickly refuted Johnson’s charge. “We know that the very entertaining former prime minister always has a unique relationship with the truth; this case is no exception,” German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said. Miguel Berger, the German ambassador to the United Kingdom, seconded the dismissal of Johnson’s account.

But Johnson is not alone. Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrij Melnyk claimed in an interview with Welt that German officials suggested Ukraine’s surrender.

This idea has been suggested to us since the first day of the war—but that’s the most cynical thing I have ever heard. Now our homes, kindergartens and whole towns are being reduced to rubble. If we surrender, the same will happen to our souls. The Ukrainian nation will be destroyed. There will be no more Ukraine.

When Germany is militarily strong, dealing with that nation is like dealing with a cluster of thorns. … Their foreign policy is sharp and piercing. They are very difficult to reason with. Often they rip and tear by cunning, crafty and devious affairs with other nations.
