Jihad and the Ostrich Syndrome
The dust had barely settled from the July 7 terrorist bombings in London. Still, extremist Islamic, anti-West invective against “the infidel” spewed forth from a crazed imam (Arabic term for a religious leader) over the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) own TV station: “Annihilate the infidels and the polytheists! Your [i.e. Allah’s] enemies are the enemies of the religion! Allah, disperse their gathering and break up their unity, and turn on them, the evil adversities. Allah, count them and kill them to the last one, and don’t leave even one” (PA TV, July 8, per Palestinian Media Watch). Thus spoke Suleiman al-Satari.
The timing of his diatribe was surely deliberate, coming as it did the day following the London bombings, in particular having in mind that chief among extremist Islam’s definition of “the infidel” are the Anglo-Americans.
Pointing to this imam’s outburst, Palestinian Media Watch stated, “Such a call does not represent a new policy—or even a shift in policy. While the PA is careful to exclude this hate ideology from the image it presents to the foreign media, to its own people in Arabic the PA has always presented itself as part of a greater Arab-Islamic conflict against the West. This enmity is focused primarily on the U.S. and Britain, who are seen as the dominant forces of Western civilization. This enmity is neither time- nor event-dependent, but is presented as part of Allah’s plan. The ultimate victory is predetermined, Palestinians are taught, and Islam will eventually rule over America and Britain.”
As the Trumpet has reported in the past, the former terrorist leader of the PA, Yasser Arafat, though mealy mouthed in his public sound bites to the mass media, spouted legendary hate-filled invective against the Israelis and Anglo-Americans in front of Islamic audiences. We buried our head in the sand and called him a statesman.
Arafat is now dead. But his tradition of diatribes against the Israelis, the U.S. and Britain lives on. Witness the broadcasting of al-Satari’s sermon over PA television hard on the heels of London’s terrorist attacks. There’s not a whit of sensitivity to the families of the dead or to the suffering in those words. Yet, like the proverbial ostrich, we bury our head in the sand and continue to insist that these are but isolated outbursts from an extreme Islamic minority. Yet, increasingly, the evidence to the contrary mounts.
Only two months ago, another imam, Ibrahim Mudayris, encouraged the faithful awaiting Britain’s demise at the hands of the followers of Mohammed with the following: “We shall rule Britain—the ultimate victory is predetermined. The Palestinian nation is the strongest on Earth. Look at all the civilizations! Look at all the states! Look at all the civilizations and forces and empires. To where did Great Britain disappear?
“We [Muslims] have ruled the world and a day will come, by Allah, and we shall rule the world [again]. The day will come and we shall rule America. The day will come and we shall rule Britain” (PA TV, May 13).
Did anyone really doubt that Muslim terrorism was behind the recent London bombings? Was it really a surprise to the world when British investigators found that those suicide bombers, who were the only-too-willing students of teachers of hate such as al-Satari and Mudayris, turned out to be Muslim? Yet the leaders of Britain and Europe continue to claim that Islam, at heart, is really a peace-loving religion.
While it is apparent that not all Islamic folk are terrorists or have terrorist inclinations, it is a fact that most Muslims are as ignorant of the basic tenets of their religion as are most Catholics and Protestants.
The masses mainly follow the religion of their forebears, unquestioned. Few really look deeply into and truly research, let alone comprehend, the real beginnings of the religions to which they lay claim and the precise teachings those religions promulgate.
The fact is that an unbridgeable gulf separates Islam from traditional Western religion.
Perhaps the most original, in-depth analysis of this question is that of the British philosopher and cultural critic Roger Scruton. In his brilliant exposé of the differences between the West and Islam, titled The West and The Rest, Scruton shows the extent to which the religious and philosophical roots of Western nations are entirely absent in Islamic societies. This automatically places the two systems at extreme odds. The result has been, historically, as it is increasingly currently, conflict. A brief study of history since the time of Muhammad will reveal that this conflict has inevitably resulted in war.
“Muhammad’s project … [was] a remarkable one: to replace the tribal society and its pagan gods with a new, universal order—the Islamic umma—founded on belief in the one true God and on the acceptance of his commands. To achieve this result, Mohammed had to persuade people that he was God’s messenger; he had also to give proof of God’s favor by success in war” (The West and the Rest).
Islamic civilization is cultivated by, and within, a common religious belief. That belief does not permit the freedoms that citizens of Western civilization take for granted.
The open society of the West allows for the disbursement of its culture abroad by inventions of its own creation, notably the mass media. Thus, when observed by Muslims, the freedoms enjoyed in the West, seen as unattainable within their own politico-religious system, become the motivation for the flight of many to places where their religion is not dominant.
Seventy percent of refugees are fleeing to the West. Yet there is no flight of Western citizens to the East. Why do so many liberals continue to bury their heads and deny the obvious reason as to why this is so?
The paradox is that, having arrived in the West, many Muslims demonstrate a hatred of the very nations that offer them the freedoms they sought. They build their mosques. They employ their teachers. Too often those imams then teach them the very same messages of hate that emanate from the restrictive system from which they fled.
The result is minds being conditioned to express a desire for the annihilation of the very people responsible for granting them their new-found freedoms!
What’s more, as Scruton observes, “[T]hose Muslims who settle down, integrate, and acquire some kind of loyalty to Western institutions and customs [even some becoming members of the British parliament] often produce children who, despite being brought up in the West, identify themselves in opposition to it—an opposition so fierce as to again verge on the desire for annihilation” (ibid.). Why is this?
The answer lies, to quite an extent, in the decline of the Western system. Since Britain gave away its empire following World War ii, and since American weakness of political will has been manifest in its not seeing any of its subsequent wars through to absolute victory, there simply exists no sense of real nation building to which the refugee from less free societies may commit.
This is the very opposite situation to that of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Then, the masses of immigrants who built the U.S. into the greatest of freedom-loving countries in the world integrated willingly into the new American culture. They literally forged a new identity. Subsequent generations from many climes became full-blooded American citizens claiming a common allegiance to one God, one flag, one nation. This to the extent that their sons even went to war against the nations of their parents’ heritage, to fight for freedom!
The July 7 terrorist attacks on London were not hatched in any Muslim country. They were perpetrated by British subjects of the Crown, of Islamic persuasion. These were the sons of refugees to whom Britain had granted the freedoms once denied them by the nations from which they fled to Britain’s shores.
Truly the hand that has fed them has been powerfully bitten by their offspring. The main architect of the 9/11 bombings, a Muslim, gained his degree at a university in North Carolina, then used this education to initiate the destruction of 3,000 lives within the U.S.
But will Britain learn? Will America learn? Will they yet learn that they simply court death by refusing to abide by even one, simple, straightforward and perfectly sensible statute of the one true God who is yet embodied in their respective national anthems? “One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the Lord. One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you” (Numbers 15:15-16).
In reality, it is the Eternal God who is responsible for the overwhelming blessings and freedoms of the West. But God demanded that to retain those freedoms, the nations thus blessed should obey certain conditions. One of those conditions was to subscribe to the above statute. In failing to do so—to bring all immigrants and refugees entering those blessed nations into submission to His divine law under the one true religion of the one true God—the once greatly blessed Anglo-American peoples are destined to continue to reap the whirlwind of terrorism from within their midst. It will simply get worse before it gets better—far, FAR worse!
But it will end! Though not the way that most think. To find out how, see our book The United States and Britain in Prophecy.
