Turkey is going through a massive transformation. Its role in the world, its allies, even its identity are all up for grabs.

During the 20th century, Turkey was a secular-orientated Western state. Now it is becoming more Islamic at the same time as it is preparing to project power beyond its borders. Turkey is opening and expanding military bases, modernizing its military, and building an aircraft carrier. Its expansion is spurring some to talk about a return of the Ottoman Empire.
