Church of England Ordains First Female Bishop
On Monday, the Church of England ordained its first female bishop. Libby Lane was consecrated as a bishop in a service at York Minster.
Archbishop of York Dr. John Sentamu led the ordination service, which was interrupted by a vicar who shouted, “No! Not in the Bible.” Sentamu ignored the interruption and continued with the service.
This ordination comes after the Anglican Church ended a long, divisive dispute over whether to allow women to serve as bishops. The church’s national assembly, the General Synod, voted last July to allow female bishops after a previous attempt two years earlier had failed.
More than 80 million members belong to the Anglican Communion. The members’ beliefs range from conservative to supporters of homosexual marriage and female bishops.
Based on Bible prophecy, the Trumpet believes the Church of England’s liberal actions will motivate many of its conservative members to return to the Catholic Church. For more information on this forecast, read our article “The Church That Swallowed a Church.”
