Iraqi Prime Minister Resigns
On August 15, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki stepped down from office. Domestic and international pressure led to Maliki’s resignation.
The United States encouraged the move. It believes the new Iraqi government will be able to confront the growing insurgency by the Sunni terrorist group, the Islamic State.
The Islamic State has taken control of much of Iraq. Political deadlock prevented Maliki from dealing with the insurgency.
Iran approved the change as it means veteran Shiite lawmaker and Iranian ally, Haidar al-Abadi, is Iraq’s new prime minister.
Abadi now faces the immense challenge of uniting Iraq’s politicians. The country’s major political factions deeply distrust each other. The military has been unable to regain territory in the north and west taken by the Islamic State.
Maliki’s resignation shows how much Iraq has destabilized since the withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Based on Bible prophecy, the Trumpet predicts Iraq will continue to self-destruct. Iran will take advantage of the situation to further its influence in the region.
