Former Occupied Soviet Nations Look to Germany For Protection

Former occupied Soviet nations see what Russia has done in Ukraine and are now looking to Europe—and specifically Germany—for protection.

Germany’s foreign minister warned on Tuesday that Europe must be prepared to take action if Russia refuses to change its position on Crimea by this weekend.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he didn’t want any confrontation, but added that Russia’s “behavior provokes a preparation for it.”

Steinmeier spoke to reporters in Estonia, at the start of a tour of three Baltic and former Soviet countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

All three countries see what Russia has done in Ukraine and are now looking to Europe—and specifically Germany—for protection.

Meanwhile, Poland, another former Russian occupied nation, is fighting to unite Europe against Russia.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Der Spiegel on March 10 that it was essential that Europe take a stronger stand and that Europe unite to face the Russian threat.

“The Americans have done even more—by relocating F-15 and F-16 jets to Eastern Europe,” he said. “In contrast to Europe, the U.S. has a centralized government. We should learn from the current crisis that European integration must also continue when it comes to security policy.”

Russia’s action in Ukraine has also altered Poland’s stance on the euro. Poland previously argued that the euro was unstable. Those calls have virtually ceased. Now some leaders see adopting the euro as a way to further integrate into Europe and add another layer of protection against Russia.

Europe’s response to Russian aggression in Ukraine sheds light on two building superpowers that your Bible prophesies will rise just before the return of Jesus Christ to this earth.

Even before World War II broke out, Herbert W. Armstrong foresaw the emergence of these two superpowers. In the June/July 1934 Plain Truth, he wrote, “Scripture prophesies two great military powers to arise in the last days—one the revival of the Roman Empire by a federation of 10 nations in the territory of the ancient Roman Empire; the other … Russia, with her allies … possibly China or Japan.”
