EU advances MERCOSUR trade deal

The EU significantly advanced its mercosur trade deal on Thursday when member states approved additional protections for European farmers. Significant imports from South America could undercut European farmers’ prices, which poses a concern for France which is heavily reliant on its agricultural exports. The safeguard has made the deal much more attractive to France. Today, French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “quite positive” regarding mercosur and indicated possible support for the deal.
