U.S. and UK Announce a Trade Deal

The United States and United Kingdom announced a trade deal on Thursday, which will relieve some of the tariffs U.S. President Donald Trump imposed on British goods last month. It is the first trade deal the Trump administration has secured since worldwide tariffs were put in place more than a month ago.

No formal deal was signed, but both President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the creation of a “trading zone” between their countries, calling it “historic” and a “breakthrough.”

President Trump said this deal would be the first of many to come.

Details:

  • America’s tariffs on British cars will come down from 27.5 percent to 10 percent for a quota of 100,000 vehicles. Any additional British vehicles sold in the U.S. will be subject to a 25 percent tariff.
  • The 25 percent tariffs on Britain’s steel and aluminum will be removed.
  • A 19 percent tariff on the United Kingdom’s ethanol will be removed.
  • UK farmers will be able to sell a tariff-free quota of 13,000 metric tons of beef in America’s market.
  • American farmers and ranchers will have access to around $5 billion in export opportunities to the UK’s market.
  • Britain will be given “preferential treatment” in certain sectors, meaning it has more negotiating ability in any future tariffs.
  • A 10 percent baseline tariff on most British goods remains.

UK officials hope negotiations will continue for reductions on other tariffed goods.

Trade war: President Trump’s tariffs have put much of the world at war with the U.S. Deals and negotiations are ongoing, with some working with America and others against it. Even this deal between the U.S. and UK does not solve all the trade problems between the two nations.
