Germany to Activate Emergency Clause for Defense Spending

Germany wants the European Union to activate an emergency clause to allow it to rapidly increase defense spending without breaking the bloc’s policies, Politico reported on April 28.

Russia’s war on Ukraine, along with the “changing environment” on the world scene, calls for a significant buildup in defense with a “major impact on its public finances,” German Finance Minister Jörg Kukies said.

  • Under the clause, EU governments would have the ability to increase their defense spending by 1.5 percent of gross domestic product each year for the next four years.

German defense: Many European countries are rearming, with Germany taking the lead.

  • Germany recently passed a new law that allows it to borrow as much as it likes domestically to spend on weaponry.
  • The incoming coalition under presumed-chancellor Friedrich Merz agreed on a €1 trillion package of military and infrastructure investment.
  • Germany has also been discussing ways to obtain its own nuclear bombs and securing the sovereignty to use them.

What next? Your Bible says Germany will lead Europe as it turns into a unified and militaristic superpower that will play a key role in the next world war.
