U.S. Removes Troops From Syria

The United States is withdrawing over half of its troops in Syria, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Friday.

  • This withdrawal will decrease U.S. manpower in the region from around 2,000 to “less than 1,000.”
  • It is also closing three of its eight Syrian military bases and moving supplies to bigger bases nearby.

Why it matters: As the U.S. abdicates global leadership, it leaves an opening for other powers to move in. If the U.S. continues to pull out of Syria, it’s highly likely that an American enemy will take over in this strategic Mediterranean nation.

Details: U.S. President Donald Trump seems to want a full withdrawal from Syria. With former Syrian dictator Bashar Assad ousted, Trump says the decreased threat level in the region is a reason to pull out.

  • The president tried to withdraw fully from Syria during his first term.

Sixty days after this initial withdrawal, U.S. commanders will decide whether to keep pulling out troops. One senior U.S. official said American commanders believe 500 troops should remain.

The current withdrawal will take place over the next few months.

Losing influence: The Bible prophesies who will soon have the greatest influence over Syria—and it is not the U.S. Because of this, the Trumpet has forecast for years that the U.S. will lose its influence in the nation.
