Hurricane John Kills 3 in Mexico
Three people died from mudslides after Category 3 Hurricane John swept over Mexico’s southern Pacific coast late Monday with torrential rains and 120 mph winds.
Mudslides: The National Water Commission in Mexico said over 10 inches of rain was dumped on the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero Monday night.
A woman and a minor were killed when a mudslide slammed into their home on the remote mountain of Tlacoachistlahuaca. A 70-year-old woman also died when her home in Malinaltepec was hit by a landslide.
Forecasters warn that more flash flooding could occur as another 10 to 20 inches of rain could fall through Thursday.
Without power: By early Tuesday, the hurricane weakened to a tropical storm but left tens of thousands of people without electricity. According to Mexico’s state power firm cfe, nearly 99,000 customers lost power.
Sinkhole: The storm also caused a large sinkhole to open on the Acapulco-Copala federal highway.
More disasters: These deadly storms are increasing in frequency. Another hurricane, Helene, is rapidly building in the Gulf of Mexico.
