4 Killed and 17 Injured in Alabama Shooting
Police are searching for multiple gunmen involved in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night that killed four people and injured 17.
Shooting: Around 11 p.m., a vehicle pulled up to a lounge in the busy Five Points South entertainment district of Birmingham. Multiple shooters hopped out of the vehicle, began shooting, and then fled the scene.
Police arrived and found two men and a woman lying dead on the sidewalk:
- Anitra Holloman, 21
- Tahj Booker, 27
- Carlos McCain, 27
A fourth man, yet to be identified, was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, but soon died from his injuries. Of the 17 people who were wounded in the attack, four are in critical condition.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond said the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident that targeted one of the dead victims.
We believe there was a hit, if you will, on that particular person as far as someone willing to pay money to have that person killed.
—Scott Thurmond
Approximately 100 shell casings were recovered at the scene, which investigators say probably came from “machine gun conversion devices” that make semiautomatic guns fire quicker.
Police began a manhunt for the shooters, but no suspects have been found.
Mass shootings: America has had 31 mass shootings this year in which four or more individuals were killed within 24 hours.
