Storms Leave More Than a Million Without Power

More than one million households in Washington d.c. and the state of Virginia are still without power after strong rainstorms swept the eastern United States this past weekend.

The rainstorms packed hurricane-force winds gusting at more than 60 miles per hour and knocked down numerous power lines. Last Friday, 1.4 million Virginians were without power. Since then, temperatures have risen into the high 90s.

Washington d.c. and four states all declared states of emergency after the storm. Meteorologists are forecasting that the sweltering temperatures will continue into the next few days. They also expect that the eastern seaboard may experience many more rainstorms this hurricane season.
