Russia Breaches Ukrainian Front Lines

Russia has significantly ruptured a key sector along Ukraine’s front line, reported DeepState—a Ukrainian battlefield monitoring group—on Monday.

Why it matters: Analysts say this breach could prove significant. In addition to helping Russian President Vladimir Putin in coming peace negotiations, it could:

• Expand Russian attacks on less-defended areas of the Donetsk region
• Cut off crucial supply lines to Kramatorsk—a Ukrainian “fortress” city
• Cause a full-scale breach in Ukraine’s defenses

Breach: This is the largest breakthrough in the war in months. In just a few days, Russian troops created two 10.5-mile prongs of control deep into Ukrainian territory.

Analyst Pasi Proinen said, “[C]learly the Ukrainians have a crisis on their hands” and the “next 24 to 48 hours will likely be crucial in whether the Ukrainians are able to contain the situation before the Russian infiltration groups are reinforced and they are able to further ‘blossom’ out to multiple directions ….”

• To stop this breach from worsening, Kyiv will likely have to send in reinforcements from other front-line battlegrounds.
• This will give Moscow the opportunity to push harder in these areas and create more front-line ruptures.

Though some Ukrainian spokespeople have downplayed the severity of the attack, Ukraine’s reaction to the development shows how serious this is. Following the incursion, Kyiv sent in the 1st Azov Corps, which is believed to be Ukraine’s best fighting force.

After final consolidation and accumulation, attempts to move deeper into the territory will be inevitable, and drone crews will be brought in, which will complicate the restructuring of alternative logistics and the maintenance of surrounding positions by Ukrainian forces.
