Russia Upgrading Nuclear Facilities on NATO Borders

Russia has upgraded and expanded numerous nuclear-related facilities close to its European borders in recent years, satellite imagery published Monday by Swedish broadcaster svt shows.

Under construction: Most notable are the developments at a suspected nuclear weapons storage facility in Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania. New buildings, advanced communications equipment and triple-layered fencing were added. The site is believed to store as many as 100 tactical nuclear weapons, and the new buildings likely allow more.

Several other nuclear-related facilities were recently developed, including sites in Osipovichi, Novaya Zemlya and on the Kola Peninsula, close to Finland and Norway. New infrastructure includes bunkers for submarine-launched ballistic missiles, a specialized pier, air defense systems and a rail-loading platform.

On nato’s doorstep: Russia is building up nuclear facilities on its borders with at least four nato member states: Poland, Lithuania, Finland and Norway. nato Secretary General Mark Rutte warned last week that Russia “could be ready to use military force against nato within five years.”

Nuclear conflict: The nuclear arms race is accelerating around the world.

  • China has doubled its arsenal of nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles since 2015, bringing the count to 600.
  • North Korea is enlarging its nuclear arsenal and building better nuclear delivery systems, thanks largely to Russian technology.
  • Iran’s illegal nuclear program became such an imminent danger to the Middle East region and beyond that Israel preemptively struck Iranian nuclear facilities last week.
