China Arms Russia With Laser Defense System

Russia has an advanced Chinese-made laser defense system as part of its arsenal, as shown in video footage released by Russian media outlets on Friday.

The footage shows a Russian special operations unit using the Silent Hunter 3000 laser system against an enemy drone. The system is designed to take out low-flying targets at a range of up to 1.5 kilometers and can also detect aerial targets within a 5-kilometer radius.

Arming Russia: Throughout Russia’s war on Ukraine, China has insisted that it is a neutral bystander. However, its substantive support of Russia economically and militarily is becoming ever more apparent.

• China is smuggling Western drone components to Russia, the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service reported in February.
• The Russian military industry relies heavily on a steady stream of microchips from China, Finnish civil intelligence agency Supo found in March.
• China has also been supplying Russia great quantities of drones and drone components, ball bearings, heavy machinery and numerous other militarily useful technologies.

Friends, never enemies: China and Russia have repeatedly emphasized their strengthening relationship since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They are “friends forever, never enemies,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a visit to Moscow in April.

Russia’s war on Ukraine has not driven away China from being its ally. China has remained a fast friend, in spite of Russia’s aggression.
