Iran Unwilling to Lay Down Its Nuclear Ambitions

Iran has amassed a record amount of uranium enriched to just less than the level needed to build a nuclear weapon, a classified report from the International Atomic Energy Agency said Saturday.

  • Iran has stockpiled nearly 410 kilograms of 60 percent enriched uranium as of May 17. This is a significant increase from the 133.8 kilograms it had stored in February.

Racing to the bomb: This uranium is just a technical step away from the enrichment level needed to construct a nuclear weapon, well above the enrichment level used for civilian purposes.

The report found that Iran has produced this highly enriched uranium at a pace of about one nuclear weapon per month over the past three months.

“Such a level of enrichment exists only in countries actively pursuing nuclear weapons and has no civilian justification whatsoever,” read a statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

Even in the midst of negotiations about nuclear disarmament, Iran is ramping up its nuclear program.

Delay tactic: Iran is the only nonnuclear state producing uranium enriched at this level. It will continue to engage in negotiations as long as it can stall a military attack, affording it the time to obtain nuclear weapons.

It may be willing to make minor concessions to bide its time, but it is unwilling to surrender its goal of being nuclear armed.

Prophetic perspective: The Bible prophesies that Iran will play a key role in inciting a global nuclear war. Ultimately, negotiations between Iran and the United States that aim to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program will be unsuccessful.
