Russia Captures Ukrainian Border Villages

Russian forces have taken four border villages in the Sumy region in northern Ukraine following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order last week to create a “buffer zone” near the Russia-Ukraine border, local authorities said Monday.

  • The Sumy region borders Russia’s Kursk region, which the Ukrainian military briefly captured during an offensive last year.
  • Seizing more of Sumy is partly aimed at preventing another such offensive into Russia.
  • The villages of Novenke, Basivka, Veselivka and Zhuravka were evacuated.

Under fire: The Russian advance comes days after its largest drone-and-missile attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war in February 2022.

The May 25 bombardment using 298 drones and 69 missiles struck civilian targets, killing at least 18 people and injuring dozens more. The severity of the bombing abated from Monday night into Tuesday, but Ukrainians remain on edge.

Failed peace: The facts show Putin has no intention of ending the war soon. Ukrainian intelligence and data show that he is “preparing new offensive operations,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an address on Monday.

United States President Donald Trump and officials of his administration have met separately with both Zelenskyy and Putin in recent weeks. Despite these efforts, peace negotiations have repeatedly fallen through. This is largely because Putin remains undeterred in his ambition to seize control of Ukraine and believes time is on his side.

Russian strongman: The Bible prophesies that a modern Russian strongman will dominate his neighboring nations and wreak terrible destruction.
