Merz Prioritizes European Unity and Defense in First Trip as Chancellor

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made his first official visit with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday in an effort to renew what has often been called the European Union’s “Franco-German motor.”

The two said they would focus on strengthening the Continent’s security and increasing defense spending.

  • The most significant announcement was the creation of a Franco-German Defense and Security Council, which says both nations will “respond together to the challenges that Europe faces.”
  • The two will jointly develop tanks, long-range missiles, combat aircraft and other new defense technologies, Macron said.

Merz also said he wanted to have discussions with France and Britain regarding Europe’s nuclear umbrella.

Ukraine: Merz said he will visit Kyiv in the coming weeks with the goal of “bringing about a lasting ceasefire and a peace agreement with Russia.” He said France and Germany would offer “security guarantees” to Ukraine after a lasting ceasefire and peace treaty have been established.

Historic defeat: Merz’s trip to Paris came the day after the designated chancellor lost the first round of voting in German parliament, a first in the country’s postwar history. The fact that it took a second vote to confirm him as the new chancellor was widely regarded as a humiliating start to his rule.

What’s next? The Trumpet has long watched for Europe to unite and militarize under one strong German leader, especially as it feels increasingly threatened by Russia. Although Merz may have significant influence within this coming superpower, recent events coupled with prophecy show he will likely not be the German strongman who will lead the entirety of Europe.
