Germany to Deploy 4,000 Troops to Lithuania

Germany plans to permanently deploy 4,000 soldiers in nato ally Lithuania, announced German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Monday.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over a year ago, Lithuania has repeatedly asked Berlin to send defensive troops to the country, which borders Russian enclave Kaliningrad.

Since June 2022, Germany has pledged to defend Lithuania in the event of invasion, but it would not agree to station soldiers abroad until now.

Infrastructure such as barracks, housing complexes and training facilities need to be built before deployment. Goals for construction time mean that German troops won’t be ready to move in until 2026, according to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.

The troops will be sent on the conditions that nato’s commander (saceur) has control over troop movement and that the deployment complies with nato’s regional plans on response to Russian attack.

The deployment is a massive addition to Germany’s military presence in Lithuania. It already leads a multinational nato brigade of roughly 1,600 soldiers (780 of which are from the Bundeswehr) in the Baltic country.

Military exercises began this week to test how quickly this battalion can be reinforced with German troops should Russia invade. Germany transferred 1,000 soldiers and 300 tanks to Lithuania for the drills, which will last until July 7. After which, nato leaders will meet for a summit in Lithuania’s capital on July 11 and 12.
