Air Base Explosions Trigger Russian Missile Attack

Explosions at two military airfields deep inside Russia killed three people yesterday. Russia responded with another barrage of missiles aimed at Ukraine energy infrastructure, killing at least four.

Drone attacks: The New York Times reports that Ukraine used unmanned drones to attack two Russian military bases, citing an anonymous senior Ukrainian official. It also reported that special forces close to one of the bases helped in the strike. Russia also blamed Ukrainian drones for the attack. Both bases are hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian border.

One of these bases houses Russia’s Tupolev long-range bombers. Similar in purpose to America’s B-52, these are designed to carry Russian strategic nuclear weapons.

This morning, Russian officials in the city of Kursk claimed that Ukraine hit another air base, striking an oil storage tank.

“If Russia assesses the incidents were deliberate attacks, it will probably consider them as some of the most strategically significant failures of force protection since its invasion of Ukraine,” the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry said this morning.

Response: Russia responded with a missile strike that hit homes and cut power to water pumping stations in Odessa, leaving the city without power. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine shot down 60 of the more than 70 missiles fired at Ukraine.
