France has just muddled through a hugely important election. Neither of its mainstream parties made it to the final round—revealing the depth of the political crisis the nation faces. The far-right National Front didn’t win, but it achieved its best-ever result. Meanwhile, Britain is also preparing for an election. Here the main left-wing party, the Labour Party, has been taken over by politicians arguably more extreme than the National Front’s. In today’s program, Trumpet contributing editor Richard Palmer examines what the rise in these extremists says about the state of these countries.
