Information is the most powerful and lucrative commodity in the world. “The basic economic currency is no longer capital, natural resources or labor. The only currency that matters now is knowledge” (The Amazing Story of CNN).

TV Guide cites that the average American now watches seven hours of television per day. That is a huge amount of information. The challenge is to find a source that can provide answers to life’s most basic questions. A source that delivers the plain truth—a source that tells you why.

Consider television news programs: 70 percent of local television news stories are one minute or less in length. Most news sources report on an event and move right along to the next event offering no clear answers, only posing unanswered questions. There is a lack of depth in news reporting.

News as Entertainment

Two examples from this present decade illustrate. 1991’s Gulf War heralded the emergence of a new era of broadcast journalism: For the first time, war was recorded and packaged as entertainment. And like a thirsty cat with a bowl of milk, the mass audience lapped it up. Soon after came the O.J. Simpson trial, which was served up to viewers as “hard news.” The media pre-empted famine and disease in Africa, financial destabilization in Asia, drought in Australia, England and the U.S., rapidly changing geopolitics—and the world sat goggle-eyed, mesmerized by the downward spiral of the life of an American football star. These stories, which garnered huge ratings for news agencies, clearly showed the appetite of the Western viewer for “news as entertainment.”

Edward R. Murrow, who reported perhaps more accurately and responsibly than any war correspondent this century, pinpointed the problem when he said that television was “an incompatible combination of show business, advertising and news.”

In a 1958 bombshell speech in Chicago which effectively ended his career, he reflected on his time as a reporter and offered a sober and blunt warning to the broadcast industry: “We are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable and complacent. Our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture too late. If we go on as we are, then history will take its revenge” (Murrow—His Life and Times).

According to Atlantic Unbound magazine, “There are no official standards to govern journalism.” Forty-one years after Murrow’s warning, we see the unfortunate outcome. News has become big business: a money and ratings game. We have every flavor of news reporting, in any country at any time. There are plenty of broadcasters who report and even analyze the news.

But none tell you why—save one.

Missing Dimension in Journalism

There is a missing dimension in broadcast journalism today. It resides in only one syndicated television program. Unlike mainstream journalism, this program is governed by the supreme standard. What is it? The program is The Key of David. The official standard is God’s law.
