Sweden’s Revolt Against Mainstream Politics
Sweden experienced a major political shift on September 11 after right-wing parties gained a majority in national elections. The results reveal a nation in revolt against decades of leftist, pro-immigration leadership. They also raise the question: Could a similar transformation soon come to other countries in Europe?
The right-wing Sweden Democrats, led by Jimmie Akesson, came in second place with a share of 20.2 percent of the vote. The Moderates, a conservative party, won 17.9 percent of the vote. Though the Social Democrats remain the largest party, the Swedish political system often relies on coalitions, and because of the Sweden Democrats’ victory, the right-wing group won a slim majority. Social Democrat Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson resigned after the vote.
Why did the Sweden Democrats win? Examining their campaign promises and recent events in the country makes it clear.
On September 15, Nigel Farage, British politician-turned-television personality, interviewed Charlie Weimers, a member of the Sweden Democrats, for GB News. “We will make sure that action is actually taken to control migration, an area where the previous government failed utterly, and that we actually start to implement reforms to fight crime,” stated Weimers. “We have shootings every night in Sweden. We have had 500 bombings during the last four years of Social Democratic rule in this country.”
In 2015 and 2016, Sweden accepted more migrants per capita than any other country in Europe. It had already adopted mass migration decades before. However, during the years of the migration crisis, violent crimes skyrocketed, including murders, drug dealing, clan feuds, attacks on women, and the infamous spree of fatal bombings that have struck urban areas. Germany’s Bild newspaper labeled Sweden the “most dangerous country in Europe.”
Despite European conservatives welcoming the victory of the Sweden Democrats, the long-term result of the election could be a political crisis. Jimmie Akesson will not become the leader of Sweden, because other parties refuse to work directly with him. Instead, Ulf Kristersson, head of the Moderates, will become prime minister. It remains to be seen how many of the Sweden Democrats he will bring into his government. This will make it more difficult for Akesson to fulfill his campaign promises.
Sweden is important to watch because it is an indicator of Europe’s future. In accepting the highest number of migrants, Sweden showed Europe what the end result of welcoming non-European cultures would be. The reaction of the Swedish people against this policy is also an indicator of what will happen in the rest of Europe.
What will happen once Sweden’s woes, and the solutions to those woes, spread to other countries? Sweden will hold the European Union’s rotating presidency in January 2023 and may be able to influence EU policy that way.
“The country’s shift to the right represents a reactionary response that may come home to roost in other countries with radically open immigration policies, with Germany the most notable example,” wrote Remix News. “Can such a political rearrangement ever occur in Germany?”
This is a crucial question. A “political rearrangement” would have more than just political consequences. Germany is the undeclared leader of the EU. It is Europe’s largest economy. It now harbors ambitions to become the EU’s largest military. If Germany were to become the next Sweden and a strong leader were to emerge, all of Europe would change rapidly. This is exactly what the Trumpet has been predicting.
In “The Holy Roman Empire Goes Public—Big Time!”, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry said what many Swedes and others in Europe are starting to realize: “Europeans have been besieged by immigrants from the Middle East, growing Muslim populations within their midst, cityscapes filling with mosques and minarets, portions of their cities turning into Muslim enclaves that local police dare not enter, even Islamic terrorist attacks.”
He continues: “Bible prophecy makes clear: Soon, Europeans will get exactly what they are asking for, another Charlemagne-type leader. This man will come to power and set himself up as a strongman over all Europe. He will effectively hijack the European Union!” Daniel 8:23 describes this leader, calling him “a king of fierce countenance,” meaning his rule will not be democratic.
Sweden is in a dangerous position. If the Sweden Democrats succeed in reducing crime by limiting immigration, other nations in Europe will eventually follow. And if the government is paralyzed by political fighting, whose who want to see the reforms proposed by the Sweden Democrats may become disposed to accept a strongman governing all of Europe in order to see change finally come to their country.
