What Does the Pope’s Cancer Diagnosis Mean?
Pope Leo xiv was diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery yesterday to remove a nodule from his lung. According to oncologists, the early detection and surgical removal offer an encouraging prognosis. However, this sudden health scare so early in his pontificate shows that man’s plans are subject to a higher power.
The surprise election of Pope Leo xiv at age 69 last year was widely believed to mark the beginning of a long pontificate. Yet only weeks into Leo’s papacy, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote, referencing numerous Bible prophecies:
In several ways, Pope Leo xiv does not fit the picture in these prophecies. I do not expect him to remain pope for long. Still, he may set the stage for a more ambitious and aggressive pope.
At the time there were no indications of a short papacy. In fact, many expected the opposite:
- In anticipation of his 70th birthday, American Conservative wrote that “reticence toward a long papacy is waning.”
- After 100 days in office, the Catholic News Service suggested that his papacy “easily could last 20 years.”
Leo’s recent surgery and lung cancer diagnosis make such a long pontificate seem far less certain and Mr. Flurry’s prediction far more likely.
Mr. Flurry did not base his forecast on what could be seen at the time but on what the Bible reveals. Isaiah 47 and Revelation 17 show that the Catholic Church will forcefully unite its daughter churches under its rule and play a critical role in the revival of the deadly Holy Roman Empire. There are also specific prophecies about the man at the top of the church when these prophecies will be fulfilled, as explained in “Where Will These New Leaders Take the World?”
