The EU—America’s New Northern Neighbor?

The United States could share a border with the European Union if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen get their way.

At the first Canada Investment Summit on September 15, Carney said Canada would seek “a unique security and economic alliance” with the European Union. The following day, he became the first non-EU leader to attend the EU’s State of the Union address. During it, von der Leyen floated the idea of Canada becoming an associate member.

Although “associate membership” in the EU doesn’t exist and it is unlikely Canada would become an associate member even if it did, the partnership is deepening. Politico reported that the two are expected to announce “an expansive new partnership” in Montreal at the end of this month.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to von der Leyen’s proposal by saying he would “put very serious tariffs” on the EU, or even “stop trading” with it “on many things,” if he deemed its efforts to make Canada an associate member to be a “hostile act.”

Bible prophecy warns the EU does have hostile motives for developing an alliance with Canada.

Canada and Europe: Historic Partners?

Addressing the European Parliament on September 17, Carney welcomed von der Leyen’s proposal. In his intro, he quoted German writer Johann Wolfgang Goethe in German: “Nur der verdient sich Freiheit wie das Leben, der täglich sie erobern muß.” This roughly translates to: “Freedom and life must be earned every single day.”

“Every day,” Carney said. “Not once in 1945, or 1956, or 1989. Every day, including this one.”

1945, of course, refers to the end of World War ii; 1956 likely refers to Hungary’s revolt against Soviet rule; and 1989 refers to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Carney essentially said that Canada and Europe are in a fight against the United States, that the trade hostility with the U.S. was the impetus for his address, comparable to Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.

He went on to state freedom was “cultivated by the founders of the European Coal and Steel Community” after the war, fostered by the European Community’s formation and preserved through the European Union’s founding.

He added that freedom “grew through” the EU’s “expansion following the fall of the Berlin Wall.” He is attributing freedom to a united Germany’s dominion of the EU.

The founders of these institutions were not cultivating freedom in Europe; they were reshackling Europe to its bloody past, the Holy Roman Empire, which was neither free nor democratic and certainly not holy.

Carney claimed that Canada and the EU “share the same deep roots” in protecting individual freedoms.

That’s not true.

Canada’s roots are in Britain. Throughout history, Britain has placed a much higher value on individual rights and freedoms than continental Europe. This can be seen in the Magna Carta and Anglo-Saxon customs predating that. Britain’s dedication to individual rights ultimately comes from the Bible and the laws God gave the ancient Israelites (for more information, read our free book The United States and Britain in Prophecy).

The roots of a unified Europe, on the other hand, go back to Charlemagne, often referred to as the father of Europe. He killed thousands to force Catholicism on the masses and to glue the Continent together (read Germany and the Holy Roman Empire in Prophecy).

The two are not the same; they are opposites.

Carney’s address revealed his willingness to rewrite history to integrate Canada into Europe.

In his address, Carney attributed Europe’s liberation in World War ii to European resistance groups rather than the American, British and Canadian troops who played a much larger role in freeing the Continent.

He claimed the two “hold common values, for which we have always fought, and in whose defence we must always remain vigilant,” conveniently leaving out that Canada and Germany weren’t defending the same values 80 years ago.

Today, what unifies them is an effort to cut America out, not shared democratic values, as Carney claims.

A New Partnership

Europe and Canada face “the erosion of democratic norms” and “the weaponisation of trade,” he said in a clear slight against the United States. He added, “Economic integration is now being weaponized, and tariffs are being used as a pressure.”

He mentioned the threat of artificial intelligence platforms controlling data. He said the combination of those two events was a “ferocious storm,” in which one tree will fall but not a forest.

Carney wants Canada to draw close to the EU to weather the storm of American unpredictability and new technologies.

Toward the end of his speech, he made his proposition to the EU clear: more cooperation in critical minerals, “defense industrial capacity, AI and compute, energy security, space and payments.”

In other words: deeper cooperation in nearly everything.

To him, allying with Europe is about sovereignty, despite the EU’s poor track record on sovereignty as highlighted by Brexit.

Why Does Europe Want Canada?

Carney partly answered that question himself: “Canada has deposits of over 34 critical minerals, and we are among the top producers of the 10 most essential for the world’s energy transition. Our alliance can help fill Europe’s need for reliable supply ….” A partnership would “close gaps” in technology and critical minerals for both.

However, there are deeper reasons.

Look at a map: America’s only major geographic weakness is its northern and southern neighbors. That’s why Germany tried to get Mexico to join it in World War i. Had Mexico taken Berlin up on that offer, World War i may have had different victors.

Germany, which is the real power behind the EU, is courting Canada to use its geography as a tool against the American superpower. That’s a bold claim, but don’t forget it tried to conquer America just a few generations ago. And Bible prophecy, which foretold Nazi Germany, also prophesies that Germany will destroy America in a third round.

The Bible’s Warning

The English-speaking countries are divided and set to be conquered.

Isaiah 9:21 prophesies an end-time division between Ephraim and Manasseh (both part of the “lost tribes of Israel”), respectively the prophetic names for the British Commonwealth and the U.S. today. This tension between America and Canada is a curse for both nations’ disobedience to God’s laws. It’s a curse for rejecting their history with God.

Hosea 5 and 7 warn that Canada will fall to that European superpower at the same time as the U.S. Canada will be betrayed. Its efforts under the Carney government to draw closer to Germany will lead to catastrophe and make it easier to conquer.

That’s what this relationship is building toward and empowering.
